We are meaning making machines and ALL words are action in the respect that they do things and inform the reader of the power relations and situated knowldge- it was ok to say coloured 30 years ago, all knowlge is historical and geographical. I thought (maybe incorrectly) that black referred to people who were in some way of Africa descent, yet some Asians now in certain circumstances choose to refer to themselves as black. (eg the National Blacl Police Association includes Asian) and apparently it it now acceptable in certainly countries to refer use the label " people of colour" as opposed to coloured. I wonder if it is more to do with having the label imposed by somebody else as opposed to applying it yourself that matters. | ||

So why would a person of different ethnic origins find it offensive being refferd to as coloured or black.I'd like to ask deferent groups how they would like to be addressed if they were being described lol I was at school when u was told we weren't allowed to say black board I mean I didn't get upset when someone said white board. | ||

Did you know that the term Slave originates from the high numbers of Slavs conquered and taken into servitude way before the Cotton trade. These people were not black.
