I was at work today and on our break we all had a chat about different sports and what race/genetics was best at certain sports e.g. sprinters are mainly black or mixed race and swimmers are mainly white etc.

I said sprinter are mainly black/mixed race due to they have more fast twitch muscle fibres and you don't see many black swimmer at the Olympics because they have denser bones.

the black bloke who was involved in our conversation says you don't see many swimmers because in the poorer countries they don't have the funding and facilities for swimmers.

on another note my girlfriend {who is a teacher} had the same discussion last month at her work and gave the same reasons as I did and was branded racist, I don't see how stereo typing genetics is racist. what do you guys think??

There is zero evidence to suggest black (assuming African/African American) or any other different coloured skinned individual has any more fast twitch muscle fibres than the pastiest of all pasty white men.

So is it just coincidence or is a different genetic factor at play?

Unless you raise people in idenntical enviroments (this means same food, exercise wombe enviroment etc) you cannot state genetics as a causal factor nor enviroment.

Otherwise your meerly looking at correlations not causal factors.

I doubt genetics count nearly as much as enviroment if at all

Both, genetics play a factor when it comes to limb length and height of the athlete etc but not muscle fibre composition. Put Mo Farrah up against that skinny white French sprinter geezer I'm sure the white guy would win...

well african nations arent that great at sprinting so im guessing its something to do with the fact the african americans jamaicans etc being descendants of slaves
as from what i understand the bigger stronger ones where encouraged/forced to breed together, think the fast twitch stuff is bulls**t as wouldnt every olympic weightlifter gold medalist be black too?

That's strange I had a similar conversation with the gym owner.I said how come given the genetic potential in coloured folk how come there's hardly any in strongman espesialy in American he said and I quote three letter NFL. but if you think about it strongman winners are normally white Europeans or white Americans. Its difficult to talk about other races without somebody saying your racist sometimes but an observation is an observation.

Something to consider in black athletes, particularly endurance competitors is sickle cell traits. Recessive sickle can be highly beneficial, with no phenotypical expression, meaning no illness
