MuscleDemon | Training the atlas stone in a conventional gym | 16-01-2014 @ 13:40

One of the five events will be lifting an atlas stone to shoulder for reps. My predicament is that I have never lifted a stone before and my gym does not cater to strongmen specific training. I have started to place a stronger emphasis on flat dumbbell flyes as I understand this exercise to emulate picking up the stone off the floor (hugging the stone) Is this correct to consider? What are some key exercises to develop stone lifting ability in a conventional gym? I can imagine I will be able to pick it off the floor yet rolling it up my torso will prove the greatest challenge. Another event new to me will be the arm over arm prowler. Which exercises can be chosen to develop this movement? ...I would imagine rowing movements and grip strength? Thanks for any guidance with exercise selection.

what is everyone's fran time? Member 3986, 10449 posts SQ 340, BP 200, DL 400940.0 kgs @ 129kgs Eq | Stiff leg deadlift and bent over rows but I imagine the stone will be light, so buying one and practising technique would be the most effective.

As a makeshift stone, I just got a few bumper plates and used them. Or use a dumbbell without using the handle.

Atlas stone was probably the easiest TBH. It was light 110-120 to a low platform to be fair, but I imagine yours will be too

Member 2775, 6927 posts | For the stones, plate wrist curls an front squats will help but yes technique. If you have bumper plates you can grip them. For arm over arm use seated row towel grip but again, lot of technique on this. Best travelling and getting a session in on them.
