I approach my first strongman competition with a flurry of excitement and purpose accompanied with a striking yet reserved trepidation.
This fear serves as a guiding strength to hone ability proceeding the event and signifies my respect for the difficulty and prominence of the competition and the sport.

One of the five events will be lifting an atlas stone to shoulder for reps. My predicament is that I have never lifted a stone before and my gym does not cater to strongmen specific training.

I have started to place a stronger emphasis on flat dumbbell flyes as I understand this exercise to emulate picking up the stone off the floor (hugging the stone) Is this correct to consider?
What are some key exercises to develop stone lifting ability in a conventional gym? I can imagine I will be able to pick it off the floor yet rolling it up my torso will prove the greatest challenge.

Another event new to me will be the arm over arm prowler. Which exercises can be chosen to develop this movement? ...I would imagine rowing movements and grip strength?

Thanks for any guidance with exercise selection.

Arm over arm, could get some rope similar to rope you will be pulling on and do rope grip pull ups / hangs ....

Stones - mainly technique thing so just get a stone and have a play or be gay and strap some 20's together .

Stiff leg deadlift and bent over rows but I imagine the stone will be light, so buying one and practising technique would be the most effective.

For arm over arm, use a rope attachment and attach it to a cable crossover at the bottom, then alternate arms.

As a makeshift stone, I just got a few bumper plates and used them. Or use a dumbbell without using the handle.

Tape some 20kg plates together and learn to pick them up; throw them to your chest and learn to flick them up to your shoulder

Just an idea

Don't bother doing a bodge job. Ideally, find somewhere you can have a go at events. If that's impossible (can't see why really) just get stronger.

The one strongman comp I did (novice comp a couple years ago) I didn't get to practice any of the events. Atlas stone was probably the easiest TBH. It was light 110-120 to a low platform to be fair, but I imagine yours will be too

For the stones, plate wrist curls an front squats will help but yes technique. If you have bumper plates you can grip them. For arm over arm use seated row towel grip but again, lot of technique on this. Best travelling and getting a session in on them.

Thank you for your advice everyone. I will review and study the exercises you have recommended and get back here if I have further questions.
