With regard to Ben's lift, thats partly why I am asking what people consider to be legitimate... level of comp', were weights weighed etc... (I'm not doubting Ben's lift by the way, just using it as an example).

as for the plates being weighed, its doubtfull, but arent all gym plates accurate to within a % or something?

Straps were allowed but presumably that would be the same in most of the strongman comps.
