Ah good stuff, I look forward to the results!

Excited / terrified in equal measure! I anticipate the terrified part increasing as it gets closer, I'm playing with the big boys now!

Did you get your bench sorted after your thread a while back? I managed to take a bit from it and mine is feeling a lot better. Still not a perfect bench, but improving.

Good luck at ESM

Davy, i've changed a few things, and in the last few weeks hit 175*1, 160*3 and 155*4, all with considerable ease compared to my old technique. Going to work on it more over the winter.

Thanks for the good luck messages everyone!

Well done today mate and nice meeting you. Would have liked to talk longer but we had to go and pick our lass up from work.

Looked like you were in a lot of pain for most of the day, hope it's nothing lasting!

Oh and two more things 1)I thought you were older for some reason and 2) have you met Niall off here? If not it would be like looking in a mirror Grin

Back is tiiiiight today! It spasmed like a b**ch! I think it was the heavy yoke followed by having to lean back a lot to clean the thin log, and it packed up. Wasn't pleasant, but copious amounts of drugs helped Grin

I'm old enough to know better
I'm only 3.5 in strongman years
I act like a child
I look about 50 first thing in the morning
My Knees are at least 160 years old
But I'm actually 27 Tongue

Also, I'm much better looking than Niall, and you DO look like Donny Osmond!

Elite Strongman Promotions England's Strongest Man
11/09/2011 - Billingham

I was very excited, and nervous as hell, going into this. Despite a good performance in May I just missed out on making the final. However due to injury I was moved up and got a place. The events were right up there with my maxes, and the line up was formidable, so I knew I was in for a rough ride, nevertheless, this is ESM final, got to give it a bash!

Yoke 400kg 15m
I knew I was looking at last place for this event. It's a terrible event for me, having done yoke only a few times (5?) in my life, and never as heavy as this! Luckily I was last to go, so tactics came into play. Everyone before me completed the course, with the slowest being 44seconds. Pick up was easy, and I wobbled a few steps, dropped, picked up, stumbled, dropped, picked up and got off smooth but slow. Put it down around the 10 metre mark, as I knew I wouldn't make the time, so wanted to conserve energy and my back.
10metres - last place

Log - 140kg, reps from chest
This was supposed to be axle, and i'd been practising it a lot, and getting rather good at it! I feel I would have got 3, maybe 4 reps on an axle. As it was, we were using one of Bobs famously horrible logs! Narrow handles and thin log meant everyone struggled more than you'd expect. I got 0 reps (just missed a lockout - more tricep work needed!) along with 2 others. Problem is my back seized up due to the clean position and put me on the floor pretty effectively.
0 reps, 0 points

Farmers - 125kg, max distance
Pretty happy with this, grip was rock solid, but my pace was slow, partly due to my back and partly due to the wrong choice of footwear ( I was told off after this for having squashy soles - rookie error, silly). It was pointed out to me that my grip lasted longer than anyone elses, but as I was moving slower I didn't cover enough ground. Lessons learned.
125kg - 32m, beat 1 or 2?

Deadlift, axle, 11" - 320kg
My maths made this heavier than the stated 300kg, but as it was initially supposed to be a van deadlift not an axle, it doesn't matter anyway. Scared for my back on this, but deadlift is usually pretty good for me. Very happy with 2 reps (PB as it happens) but back wouldn't lock in tight enough for a 3rd.
2 reps, beat 2?

Stones - 160kg over yoke
Loading has been going well (calf injury permitting) so was looking forward to this. Managed 4 reps, steady pace, tidy. I think I had another rep in me, but ran out of time. If I'd rushed the earlier stones to get the extra rep in I doubt I would have had a 5th in me as I'd have been gassed, so I think I got this dead right.
4 reps, beat 1, tied with another?

Overall, 7th place.

Yoke was as good as could be expected, log was a little unlucky as axle would have got me a few points from the look of it. Farmers was good and taught me a couple of lessons, deadlift was good, and so were stones.

Well done to Lloyd who was consistent throughout the day, as was Mike, and Mark too put in a strong performance.

Thanks to Bob and his Elite crew, superb job, as with every show.

Thanks too, to everyone who wished me luck and who said 'well done'! Also to those who made the 400 mile round trip to shout at me!

Realy happy with how this all went. It's my first final, and it won't be my last. My target for strongman was always to make the final of England's Strongest Man, and, belong at that level. My goal was to do this by the time I was 30. After 3 years and 2 months of strongman, and 3 years ahead of schedule I have achieved it.

I know I still have a long way to go to be what I would class as a top domestic strongman, but this year I have taken a good number of steps in that direction. I now need to reassess what I want to get from this sport, as having achieved my goal, I realise it is not enough. It doesn't feel like the finish line. I want more. Importantly, I know I'm capable of more.
