Different people are into different things. And are willing to spend as much as they deem necessary.

Its like saying why drive a Ferrari when you can use a 400quid one litre runabout.

Horses for courses and all that.

I guess there's several reasons for owning a nice watch. For some it's a fashion accessory or a status symbol. For others it's simply a tool for telling the time and for another group it satisfies a need for mechanical perfection. a quartz watch will often outperform a mechanical one but for some that's not really the point.
I suppose there are other areas where modern technology is rejected in favour mechanical perfection, I've quite a few cameras and I have to admit there's something really nice about a well exposed black and white film photograph as opposed to a digital picture. Leica and Hasselblad are at the top end of the film camera market and have a very loyal following, you are paying a lot more for one of these for that extra few % improvement in performance (lenses can be a couple of thousand each).
I suppose valve amplifiers, high end turntables are a few other areas where they can outperform the modern equivalent but at a price.
can anyone think of others?

For that money I'd be looking at a radio controlled, solar powered, casio G shock. Supremely accurate and virtually indestructible, but utterly soul-less

I have one and get it out of the drawer each summer as i wear it for work, and within a few seconds its displaying the exact time.

Rugged yes, soul? Nada.

I really like watches but virtually never wear them. My list:

Omega Speedmaster - Moonwatch baby yeah. Got this for 1500 ish for my 21st birthday, Keep seeing it in shops at £2350 now, result.

Fake U-Boat - £2 from turkey but I love it.

Fake IWC - £5 from turkey and again I love it.

Gold Acurist - My mum bought it my dad about 30 years ago but it doesnt fit him so I got it.

D&G something or other - Girlfriend got it me for my 18th. Looks nice.

Speedmaster comes out about 3 times per year. The others a tincy bit more. I really should wear them more
