Whether it truly finds the best strongman in the world or even the strongest man is a whole different thing. It probably does the former in regard to the nations represented.

How would you choose the strongest man?

I think you have to win or do well in national comps , not sure if these national comps / giants live can be qualified for or its invitations , I suppose if you are good enough you are gonna get invited to an official qualifier, but there is a better chance of you making WSM if you are british or a yank

I understand the top three at international comps qualify for WSM.

Qualifying sounds abit messy but it seem to work well, if you're good enough then you'll get invited to a Giants live and then you have your chance

While there aren't many official 'qualifying' comps, there are a couple of comps that do enable people to go from theoretical no one, to competing at Giants live (which is technically the WSM qualifying tour), Londons strongest man being probably the best known example. Though I seem to recall bodypower offering an invite to giants live this year as well.

For me, strongman comps come closest to it.
But many may disagree.

I don't feel there is anything wrong with the system in place if you impress in comps you get your chance eventually

I agree .. System is solid for US and UK guys ! There are now more opportunities than ever to get up the ladder .

If you look at WSM you need characters to build a popular sport and get a big following on TV . No good having a totally new field of athletes every year, You need people sat at home getting behind their favourite guy a bit like your big brother - I'm a celeb - X factor - BGT . .

Point being if you wanted to take Koklaevs place in WSM then it's no good being as good as him - You need to be better ! I think that is healthy for the sport in front of a wide audience .

Also I think federations f**k things up ! Look at the state of powerlifting - shambolic mess ! BPO BPU BDFPF GPC - these probably aren't correct ?!?

One final thing is that I think UK strongman is in a unbelievable place !

Eddie Hall
Adam Bishop
Ben Kelsey
Graeme Hicks
Mark Felix
Terry Hollands
Big Loz
Chris Gearing
Lloyd Renalds
Simon Johnston
Luke Stoltman

And Of Course Paul Savage !

There just the ones off the top of my skull

Tons more guys busting their f**king chops day in day out to rival these guys too in and the weight divisions !!

In a land where there were no injuries the WSM entry list would be fairly predictable (except for last year where the date change screwed things up).

You have the previous years finalists

1. Thor Bjornsonn
2. Warrick Brant
3. Mike Burke
4. JF Caron
5. Eddie Hall
6. Terry Hollands
7. Dave Ostlund
8. Jerry Pritchett
9. Zydrunas Savickas
10. Laurence Shahlaei
11. Brian Shaw
12. Martin Wildauer

Then you have the guys who qualified from Giants Live

13. David Nystrom
14. Mateusz Baron
15. Rafal Kobylarz
16. Jason Bergmann
17. Matjaz Belsak
18. Martin Forsmark
19. Johannes Arsjo

Two more from the UK to make the minimum of 5

20. Graham Hicks
21. Mark Felix

And ten further invitees based on past performance and nationality.

22. Frankie Schuen
23. Gerhard Van Stadden
24. Vytautas Lalas
25. Ole Martin Hanson (Norway seem to have one guaranteed entry and Solvang has been off form for a long time)
26. Robert Oberst
27. Krystof Radzikowski
28. Nick Best
29. Grzegorz Szymanski
30. Mikhail Shivlyakov (Koklyaev has retired?)

Then you have a reserve from the US one from the UK and one international.

They will probably be Bishop, Savatinov and Zageris

So injury aside I would expect the entry list to look a lot like that if the competition takes place in March again.

Britains seems to have too many whether this is through sponsers or tv rights? Im disappointed with the lack of Scandinavians unless there is a lack of competitors or injuries.

UK is guaranteed a competitor per group. To be fair if you disregarded nationality and got the best 30 guys possible at least 5 of them would be Brits. Just look at WSM 2014 - 3 Brits in the final and 2 more very close.

Next year there are 3 guys from Sweden already qualified and there always seems to be one from Norway. To be honest the only guy from Scandanavia who has had major success at the top level in recent years is Arsjo.

Good post, hard to disagree with much of that.

Word is it's in April 2015

Of course it is worth remembering that there will be another couple of Giants Live events before WSM so there is still time for some guys to force themselves in.
