Whilst they certainly earn their money, those guys normally earn a decent living and the 50% time off they get can certainly help training when off rotation but I wonder if there's been some negatives as well as positives? His 2nd place at WUS would have certainly helped fill any pay gap in the short term at least.

AdamT said: I would give shaw and Thor a slight edge Depending on events I think if you used the 10 most commonly competed strongman events then Z would lose to prime Thor or Shaw. Especially if they were competing among a strong field of guys. His weaknesses lose him more points than the other two. There's a reason why grip strength was largely abandoned as a test in strongman when Z was in his prime.

drex50 said: Im not sure. Repping 205 in 90 seconds is another game. He trains only for record. When did he finish a competition? Manchester last autumn. The log record is a tough one. A lot more variables than the deadlift. We saw Z fail a lot of lifts around 230kg. You need more than just to be capable of lifting it. You need the right log for you and for everything to go just right with the lift. It's interesting to note that we've generally gone backwards in log lifting in the last 10 years. 8-10 years ago we had Z, Radz and Mike Jenkins lifting more than we see guys do today. Seems a lot of people can get up to 200kg, maybe 210kg but can't seem to get the balance for more. Still, these things come and go out of fashion. The deadlift is huge now because a lot of comps have a max deadlift so everyone trains it. Hardly any comps do max log so it isn't trained. When it comes back into fashion someone will get it.

AdamT said: I think current Thor is better than any version of Shaw and I am a Shaw fanboy I put Shaw as the best ever because of the success he attained across a whole decade and the fact that he really took the sport to a different level in terms of professionalism and having no weaknesses. I agree this version of Thor beats Shaw at his best. Hence me rating him as the strongest man who has ever lived.

billynomates said: How does one secure that title though? Its all subjective. For me, Z has that crown currently due to his dominance of strongman over a 10 year period. It would be difficult for Thor to surpass that in one year. Thor is currently all round stronger than Z at his strongest though. Z is the greatest ever. Shaw is the best ever. Thor is currently the strongest ever.

AdamT said:Not the thread for this, but I have just seen Thor hit an easy ass double with 954lb on deadlift Is that like 432? I think he will get 501 I don't think he will this year. It's the second day of competition and for it to happen you almost need two guys capable or at least nearly capable of getting the 501kg to actually push him to go that high mid comp.

I remember in 2016 thinking nobody would be able to beat him for years To be fair he finished 1 point behind the current WSM. It was still a top 5 in the world performance.

Enjoyed the show but with a reduced number of athletes, only 4-5 events in the heats, all of them the same and only 5 events in the final it felt very much it was done on the cheap this year. The final should be 8 events in my opinion but I at least hope they go back to 6 for next year.

He didn't just win, he put in the best display in a WSM final since Pudz in 03 IMO.

Only 5 people in each group instead of 6? All the qualifying heats’ events practically the same. With Thor injured it could turn out to be one of the most exciting ever but just by coincidence. The new format is s**t IMO. Am I missing something? Will this Male great telly? We’ll soon see. It feels to me like it's been done on a much tighter budget than before. Have less athletes for less time saves money. Fewer events meaning less equipment has to be shipped. Less variety of events between heats for the same reason.

Terrible event 1 for the Brits sadly. All bottom 2 apart from Luke.

Flash said: The stones cost him last year, as he had a torn bicep going into the event (which also badly cost him on another event). Knowing him as I do, I’m sure he would class stones as one of his better events I certainly hope you'll right. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for him.

I think he was only beaten by the Stoltman brothers at Brits this year, and only by a few seconds. He has always been a great stone lifter, and his conditioning should pay dividends in an event like this. Mon’ the Bish The Stones cost him a final place last year. He's good. But at that level good isn't always good enough. I think Bish is very good at the other events. Having it all comes down to the stones makes him a lot less likely to qualify IMO. |
