Jst wondering how often you all go for deep tissue massages and howmany of you use them for injury prevention instead of just when you get injured.

Recently injured my back while doing beltless squats, was using heavy weights but not maximal weight and form stayed good but still managed to get injured. Went to get a massage yesterday and the guy said I had quite alot of pretty large knots in a number of places on my back. Makes me wonder if this injury could have been avoided by having regular massages instead of using them only as a way to recover from injuries.

It turns out too expensive for most people to do them regularly and for injury prevention. Most people go when something is tight to the point of causing them grief and they don't know what's what. Certainly worth it though.
In an ideal world I would get one once a month, but as it is I get one maybe every 12 months why I get a bit of sciatic nerve twinging.

Up until recently I was having a massage every 6-8 weeks, it does help keep things from getting excessively tight.

At 30 quid a pop they deffinately arnt cheap, but tempted to try keep up with getting one done every month or 2 if i can afford it.

My mobility for squats etc seems to improve a fair amount after having jst one leg massage but of course maybe 6 months later when i start feeling tightness or get injured, mobility has gone back to square 1.

Rarely if ever. But only because I struggle to justify the expense.

Try the poor man's massage; rolling around on a foam roller, tennis balls or even hard rubber dog toys (strange but true) can get the knots out of your back and elsewhere. It's effective but you really need to have your explanations ready for when a loved one enters the room.

I have a foam roller and think its pretty good, but not half as effective as a massage, in my opinion.

The uni I work for has organised guys who are training to come in and use is to practise on. How long would you say to leave between sessions? Had to cancel yesterday's session due to having too much work, but got one today from another guy. I think YMCA often look for people to practise on.

I have an hour every week, currently focussing on a couple of quad issues. So it tends to be pretty intense and localised with a fair amount of trigger work. I think probably every 5 days for something so intense is about right, as you will need to recover. I do some self manipulation and soft tissue work myself inbetween, but not to anywhere near the same level.

If you're rotating sites or having a more general / superficial massage then there's no reason you can't be on the couch three times a week in my opinion.

I've had 6 in the last 2 weeks. If I'm coming up to a competition I up the frequency. Apart from that it's every payday Happy

Just got qualified in this, so it will be my job quite soon. I think it depends, if you have a problem area that needs a lot of deep work, you need time to recover and get used to using your muscles differently, so maybe every 1-2 weeks until it is cleared then maintain it every 4-6 weeks. If you are a hard training athlete and want a general treatment to help your recovery without a lot of deep work (like you see most athletes getting after their sessions in all the training hall videos) you can probably get one every week or two, once a month if finances are tighter which is the main factor really.

Honestly if we are talking about injury prevention id rather go see somone whom can assess the route cause of injury not just treat the soft tissue symptoms. But an hr a week is gona be time well spent I reckon.
