Think you might be confusing "not good for your shoulders" with "not good for overhead work".

Before someone jumps on me and says they've done behind the neck pressing since they were in nappies and they've never had any shoulder problems, not everyone gets shoulder problems from BTN stuff. If you're one of the people whose shoulder anatomy results in a reduced acromioclavicular gap, doing BTN stuff is going to wreck your shoulders. If you have a nice large joint space, you can do BTN stuff till the cows come home without problems. It's just that there's no way to work out which of the two groups you fall into without actually doing BTN stuff and risking shoulder problems.

Why behind the neck? How about "in front of the neck" push press, with a regular grip?

Behind the neck is supposed to involve the rear delts more - so would help if this was a weakness (which i think it probably is in a lot of people).

My shoulder can't really take much behind the neck stuff though

I have always found dropping it back on my neck hurts and causes bruising.

The main reason behind the neck drills were originally used was to teach aspiring Olympic weightlifters the best line for lifting - when one jerks in this motion the head is already pushed through and the hips naturally drop back on the drive which gives a straight line without the body having to adjust under the bar.
Due to this larger weights can be shifted from behind the neck.

If anything given the anatomical use of the rear delt there will be less involvement in a press behind the neck as the shoulder is already drawn back eliminating one of the uses of the rear delt.

A nice variation from time to time if you are skilled at catching the bar correctly and comfortable enough and useful for developing confidence to drop under large weights but inferior in terms of sporting use to the front push press in my opinion.

Only tried BTN work a couple of times, shoulder wasn't too keen on it. That was before I started stretching and doing shoulder dislocates, though. I guess I had really tight shoulders back then... I might give them a go again to see if they still feel awkward. Apparently you're good for about 10% more from BTN - might even manage to get my bodyweight over my head.

so why is from the front better if you are moving less weight?

By all means clean a weight to the back of your neck if you can.

BTN press is done in that manner on the rare occasions it appears in strongman comps.

BTN pressing ain't for me. Doesn't suit my anatomy and I feel it would be inviting injury.

Can't stand them personally, always feel like I'm gonna rip my shoulder!

Think the comment that BTN don't help was from Big Tel a little while back (might be wrong so don't hate me - and can't be arsed searching for it!)
