"They want to muzzle us to make us meek" is not a motive that stands a moment's scrutiny: it does not lead to profits not more easily made elsewhere, or votes ditto. Mask-wearing is compulsory outside in France and has been for weeks. They're not exactly noted for their meekness or compliance in the face of their government.
