Member 541, 5397 posts SQ 192.5, BP 120, DL 222.5535.0 kgs @ 92.8kgs UnEq | So neo-nazi militias have formed in the border regions of Ukraine in response to the Russian led, funded and defended seperatist areas. Not a welcome development, but it doesn't give Putin the right to invade the whole country. There ate neo-nazis in Russia too, the only difference is that they are running that coubtry, if the last few days are anything to go by luki said: Neonazis are supported from government and seen as saviors by the Ukrainians at the Donbas boarder. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-cohen-ukraine-commentary-idUSKBN...

'where are the massive push, air strikes/ navy?' Its all about weakening the west. the only opinion I have is simple. The news is reporting Putin 'insane', Russia bad, west good. Moreover good v evil. Is life really that black and white? it is certainly not. i grew up in a time when we were in fear of necular war and I be dammed if Im going to impose this fear on my children. They do not watch the news. Ive chosen to have a Russian war media blackout. any talk of the 'war' on the radio...the station gets changed. although Im not getting involved in the current fear drive, I am preparing for massive economic impacts. inflation and shortage, manufactured or otherwise, this is our biggest threat.

If you think Putin's invasion of Ukraine is a case of '6 of one, half a dozen of the other', then you clearly haven't been paying attention.

The focus has shifted from covid being the biggest threat to civilisation since ww2 to Russia. im just not giving it any attention. same a global warming or is it climate change? either way, I can barley contain my indifference.I do however look for patterns and overarching themes. Do whatever you like people, but I have chosen to prepare (stock up) for shortages of goods, mainly food in the anticipation of shortages but mainly dramatic price rises. I dont think anyone could argue that having at least a bit more than perishables in the fridge, wouldnt be a bad idea at the moment. after these 2 years, Ive come to expect the unexpected. I had thought that China didnt approve of the recent Russian actions in Ukraine, what is the coverage like on Chinese news sources?

The phrase that springs to mind is 'with our thoughts we make the world'. i think we all have to take a good hard look at how our thoughts and opinions and moreover, perceptions are shaped by the media. I also heard that Russia has banned the BBC. As a libertarian, I am strongly against censorship. People should have choice and a chance to view all opinions and angles. i work with a few Eastern Europeans, where they dont agree with this attack they all appear to have some sympathy with the Russians. Its nice to get a differing perspective. billynomates said: My first thought on that is that they don't know what they're talking about, but like a lot of things today it probably depends on where they're getting their news. Russian propaganda must be very strong. I suppose it is because there is very little free media in Russia(None after today's law is passed). There was an item I saw today where a Ukrainian/Russian woman rang her parents to tell them the Russians had attacked, and her parents did not believe her, such was the brainwashing they had received

US has used them in Afghanistan, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Cambodia, Grenada, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Lao PDR, Lebanon, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Vietnam, former Yugoslavia (Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia), Yemen. UK also used cluster bombs in Falklands/Malvinas, Iraq, Kuwait, Kosovo/Serbia (Yugoslavia). There are no good invasions.

Politics rely on people having gold fish memories...and in the main, they do.The use of propaganda to control the perceptual reality of people in the East... Compared this to the West? I just dont know, how could I? I also think its important to understand the position of people like myself, questioning and arguing the black and white 'good v evil narrative. However, understanding in contrast that I feel very bad for the familys currently going though this conflict. I think there is a lot of information coming through. whether or not it is 100% factual, it is designed to form opinion and therefore perception. this is why I am cautious at looking at every bad news story (fighting near the necular plant as an example from the west and in contrast, taking out of USA bio-labs as a major goal coming from the Easter news) but chose instead to think about the reality of the fallout for all the people involved. 'There's nothing good that comes out of war. It's simply hell on earth, and people survive, and people don't.' luki said:USA lecturing Russia on (allegedly) using cluster bombs and having to withdraw part of the speech because someone realised they are the largest cluster munitions manufacturer and have not signed the anti cluster munitions convention was amusing. Yeah, they’re consuming propaganda/heavily censored social media, so that massively sways opinion. The official Chinese position (ie what you see on the media, which is 100% state controlled) seems tentative but more pro Russia position than with Ukraine.

Yes, the Chinese government is in a tricky situation really. Xi and Putin have been all buddy buddy the last couple of years, and I'm sure the Chinese calculation is, the west doesn't want Russia's oil and gas, they'll have it. On the other hand, having railed - understandably - against western imperialism for years, openly siding with what is, effectively, Russian imperialism would seem extremely hypocritical. And does China want to spend the next 20 years bailing out a bankrupt Russian economy? Doubtful. I actually think China could hold the key to stopping this becoming even more of a bloodbath than it has already become.

I think what the USA and EU have been complaining about more than the use of cluster bombs and vacuum bombs - has been deliberate Russian shelling of civilians, which is occurring even after both sides have negotiated a temporary ceasefire. How can you justify that?
