And back to the critical question - why would anyone sign up to this outside of a potential (read: odds on in their mind) top 6-7 finish?

.. what?

I'll try again.

Why would anyone except those who have good chances of a prize winning position (say a total of 6-7 people) sign up to this competition for the price of 100-250 quid?

There is no chance of this happening

You can barely organise your own thoughts nevermind a comp

Id rather trust a crackhead with 200 quid than you

LOL

Why don't you just spit it out and say what you really think, Ben! Wink

I think you need to take a look at the strongman demographic.

This sport is not populated, on the whole, with well-heeled 'professionals' with lots of disposable income. Perhaps I'm stereotyping, but based on my personal knowledge, that's the reality.

Add in to this the needs of those with dependents and/or families... Parting with this kind of cash seems irresponsible and foolish.

Given a choice between even competing at £100 per time, and a new garage roof...any one of many house repairs...a new clutch for my car... I know what I would and will choose!

Edit: why am I even bothering...

Would you choose to compete?

I'm not sure that's the case anymore, I believe there are quite a few more 'professionals' into the sport now, but being well heeled also means you have a fair bit of intellignece and there wherewithall to know that unless you really are one of the best strongmen here you're not going to gamble £100 and hope one of the better strongmen has some really bad luck so you win! I am fortunate enough to have that sort of disposable income but i spend it on a meal for the family not on a comp!

I think the big problem with this is that my mindset is vastly different than most competitors, which i didnt realise. Personally, if someone offered me chance to earn a lot of money doing what i love, i would jump at it and work my balls off to make it happen. The thought of losing £250 would never enter my mind, as i wouldnt be thinking about losing, i would be thinking about winning. Honestly i thought all competitive athletes had a similar mindset, but it would seem this is not the case.

Were you thinking about winning all those strongman comp you've entered and not won?

So basically your are targetting two types of athletes: the best of the best who are pretty much guaranteed to place, and the deluded.

Buy you didnt win or qualify did you?

Your party line seems to be that if your ambitious, work hard and "want it" you can acheive anything (ie. get in the money places in these comps..)

we all now this is total bulls**t!
