Training in your old(er) age

Just curious about this really. I've had to strip back some things in order to focus on some other things for health reasons. Wondering what some of you see as being your priorities when you're no longer competing or getting on a bit (more).

Keep up the favourites? Drop the riskier stuff (stones perhaps?)? Never pull heavy off the floor again? Train fullbody a couple of times a week? More traditional cardio? Never touch a weight again and buy Jane Fonda's entire workout tape collection?

I think as you get older it's important to take on a more broader range of exercise across all the principles of fitness as opposed to battering one or two. It's all well and good being strong, but pretty useless if you can't tie your shoelaces. By the same token it's no use being cardio fit and being too weak to fill a kettle (unless you genuinely don't want a brew, then it's ok).

Less specialising, more generalising, and you can take that to the bank Wink

Depends what age you class as getting on a bit? I've found I can train almost as much, although my flexibility is f**ked!

Older will probably vary a lot for different people. Some will go on and on, there were guys in their 50s at my old gym who trained like the 20 year olds, a couple seemed indestructible. Others will tone it down much earlier, injuries/life/stop competing etc.

Tend to agree that there is less of a need for specialising, and it pays to be more rounded.

Interested in people's take on the risk/reward aspect of certain things, maybe heavy heavy deadlifts/squat/overhead or certain events being somewhat high risk. Perhaps some things like say farmers walk (for me) being relatively low risk for higher reward.

I train the same as always, I just make sure I spend time warming up, rather than just jumping in, so far so good

I train exactly the same as I always have, barring the quad tear meaning I can't squat for s**t at the moment but once it recovers I'll be back at it.
At 46 I'm in the best shape of my life and plan to continue improving.
Age is just a number.

very difficult to get rid of moobs though, this may be diet or just oldness.

There was an old guy at a gym I used to train at, I think around 70 or nearly there. Walked all crooked and hunched like an old man, yet somehow easily did 200kg for reps every other session on deads.

He competed back in the 70's and did 305kg at eighty something BW and squatted the same.

My main concern is that I can't keep t**tting the gear and training natural carries f**k all appeal . I could give two f**ks about making 70 but I don't want to live with loads of health problems so I'll probably just become a distance runner once I feel my heart and prostate are suitably enlarged.

I'd like to say that hurting my back lifting shopping out of the car yesterday didn't play a role in this thread, but it did.

You really think you'd jack it all in, PAGAN? I'm looking at my parents who are now in their mid 60s and thinking that they are starting to look frail, the cumulative loss of muscle is starting to show. I still want to be able to do pull-ups, some form of squat and pull a good bit more than my bodyweight at that age.

I find it sad that you wouldn't want to continue lifting without the use of PED's, its just another reminder of how drugs is very much the norm these days.

IMHO lifting natural in the later years albeit in moderation if you choose will have far more health benefits than not lifting.

In many cases the damage done by long term use of PED's is permanent and old age may not be an option some Unhappy

Why not take the middle path and keep on taking a TRT dosage, and do a little bit of conditioning on top of strength training?

You'll have the test levels of a genetically gifted natural and will probably feel better and be in better health
