I enjoyed this from Rogue - https://youtu.be/vck32S27RmM - about Basque strongmen.

I particularly enjoyed some of the high rep stuff, and these days I consider doing things for long periods of time, or longer distances to be a pretty integral part of 'strength'.

Front squats from the bottom up.

I suspect they're really good, and stuff, but I'd like to keep my skull and brain intact for some years yet.

Probably won't do much bench again, probably won't deadlift from the floor very much in future either.

Looks like you have something, but I'll ask a mate anyway. He used to run a big place that would have been ideal, but was ill for a while and had to sell it. He might be back in that game in the near future though.

EDIT: For squat I find people I have seen using thumbless flare the elbows to compensate and cheat upper back strength/tightness.

Interesting. I used to squat low bar, and had to grip the bar somewhat. Now I squat high bar, I find thumbless allows me to keep the elbows in more and puts less stress on them as I don't need to grip the bar.

Appreciated. I felt left out, even if I am a normal.

Consider olive oil.

He's a great read, and his forum is pretty good too. Especially for more normal people, like me. Remember he doesn't really have editorial control over what he submits to t-nation, he's at that hinted several times on his forum, but biting the hand that feeds isn't his style.

Some of his stuff has been really useful to me, regressions are corrections for instance. Doing a lot of goblet squats, then double kb front squats has got me to the point where I can back squat again after hip and knee issues.

His forum was where I was first exposed to cardiac output work, and that's been a huge change for me over the last few months.

In general, Dan's methods are a way I can see me training in the very long term. Throwing KBs about, some barbell work, in my 60s is the plan.

If you're working with his sort of intended population, then that sort of money is exactly the kind of investment you should be considering in your business.
» Who here can do 100kg squat for 30 reps (Go to post)10-02-2015 @ 11:43
Think it's bang on my high rep PR at 80kg, but not without some serious breathing style pauses, no re-racks.

80kg@80kg bw - 42reps
100kg@80kg bw - 30reps

Think both took a similar amount of time, which felt like several hours.

Done low bar, and I've since switched to high bar and don't beat myself up with squats like that any more.

Very impressive.

As I last posted in here in November, I thought I'd post a bit of progress. You may remember I was using an exercise bike for cardiac adaptation purposes, and hating 45min sessions. Still on that same road, but this morning's session went:

Bike:
Duration: 70mins
Avg HR - 127bpm
Max HR - 141bpm
O2 sats - 98% at 45min. 97% at end

No real pump or leg discomfort now. My sessions from here will be between 55-80mins looking to push the average heart rate slightly up from there to about 130bpm.

I was pretty poorly two weeks ago, was finding that 45min sessions at 90rpm was pushing my HR to about 140bpm average. Pretty unpleasant lung congestion so it's taken a lot of work to get myself back to this.

Is the wide angle lens ideal though?
» Can you make decent strength gains training 2x per week?? (Go to post)10-01-2015 @ 16:10

What I'm driving at is that you probably can't cover all bases in two sessions. Some things are going to have to be left to next month, or get some crossover effect. That sort of consideration.

A few exercises done hard seems to be the key to more minimal training. Trying to hit everything in two sessions means nothing is likely to be done well.

Tend to agree with cowie, it seems like too much in each session. How about a more events focussed day and a more gym based day?

Events
Deadlift
Log or axle floor to overhead
Carry

Gym
Front squat/squat
Bench/dips
Rows/pull-ups
» How strong are powerlifters really? (Go to post)04-01-2015 @ 21:49
If it's 340, then he's a freak amongst freaks. They do exist, they don't necessarily turn out to be the greatest athletes in a non strength sport. And some of the great athletes in those sports were nothing to write home about in the gym.

There were stories years ago about Mat Tait being a freak in the gym, as strong as some of the front row at Newcastle. Same with Tom Youngs when he was a young centre before he was converted to hooker, used to mix it with strong forwards back then.

Yeah, there's not much to argue about there. Very impressive.

I wonder how many of those sprinters are actually looking for the marginal gains in acceleration over top end speed? Perhaps that's already in place...

Makes me wonder what actually needs developing with the majority of sprinters to take them to the top level.
