It had the feeling of a "classic" to me. Nostalgia may have blinded me somewhat but some good new characters, no over-reliance on CGI and a massive "give me more" feeling at the end. Spectre - 3.5/5 - enjoyable Bond nonsense. Formulaic but done well. Not sure how many more Bond's Daniel Craig can do - Bond girl hotness was medium rather than outstanding Older Netflix nonsense Flight - 3/5 - Denzel rarely disappoints (apart from the astonishingly bad "Book of Eli") and he gives a good performance as a "hard to like" alcoholic. Follows the Hollywood three act formula of crisis/epiphany/redemption to decent effect Olympus has fallen 2.5/5 - not a "bad" film per se. the body count and exploding helicopter count are very high. The plot is Die Hard in the White House with a end speech that makes the Indepence Day equivalent seem subtle. Switch off brain early on and you'll be fine The Hobbit - an unexpected journey - 4/5 - lots of references to the Lord of the Rings films, which would be confusing if you haven't seen them. Martin Freeman plays his typical "annoyed man out of his comfort zone" to good effect. Nice CGI and utterly stunning location scenery. Looking forward to the next two. | ||

 ‘downsizing’ Member 5704, 3236 posts SQ 280, BP 210, DL 320810.0 kgs @ 96.3kgs UnEq | Watched these 2 recently Force 10 from navarone good ww2 action film, strong cast - dialog a bit cheesy in places. physics a bit crap at end - would such a thinly butressed bridge be knocked down by a fast flowing mass of water? Pulp fiction Seen it few times before - complicated non-linear story, loads of subtle references to other films, love the rambling trivial dialog that surrounds the violence. prefer it to QT later films that ramped up the stylisation and pop culture referencing to irritating levels. spoiled a bit now by winston wolf doing those f**king insurance adverts. | ||

The pick (without the list in front of me): Inside Out Whiplash Foxcatcher Fury Road The Martian Carol The ones that did exactly what they should: Ghost Protocol American Ultra Spy Trainwreck Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse Bridge of Spies Brooklyn The worst: probably Pixels. Or Minions. The biggest disappointment: probably Absolutely Everything; or Minions, after two great Despicable Me films. Spectre is with a mention, too; it's a much better film, but my expectations were sky(fall)-high. I liked a lot of films a lot this year, though. | ||

AKA the great reset Member 4056, 5207 posts | Force Awakens 9/10 I really enjoyed it. Thought it was being a bit hyped and worried it wouldn't deliver. I am looking forward to the sequel. The Prestige 9/10 Seen this a couple of times, but decided to watch again. Fantastic film from Nolan, with great lead roles from Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale. Also Michael Caine plays a good part. Love a good film with a twist and leaves you thinking about it, when it's over. | ||

Lost his pen, then found his pen. #phew Member 4899, 2956 posts | As I was watching "Making a Murderer" the tune that kept playing in my head was the chorus to "Town without Pity" because, as you know, it isn't very pretty.... With any documentary you must always bear in mind that every shot you see is being presented to you for a reason, but there was so much of it - especially the "interviews" with Brendan Dassey, the press conference giving the salacious details of how Halbach was supposedly killed etc that I just watched and thought "No f**king Way" whilst shaking my head. I don't know if it is standard practice but the way the Investigators were sat close to Dassey and were often touching him was particularly uncomfortable viewing. If you liked The Prestige can I suggest "The Illusionist" with Edward Norton as a companion piece? I think the later is a better film and has just the sort of ending that appeals to me.... | ||

Both good films. | ||
