British Natural Strongman Northern Champs

This was the qualifier for the british nattys and was on the day weigh in which I haven't had for a while but weighed in OK with no real issues at 104kg at 9am, spent the next hour eating flapjacks, drinking water/lucazade and started warming up about 10.45 after the athletes meeting.

Found out there was only 4 athletes in the 105s which was disappointing, the draw was done for a the first event and was lucky enough to be drawn out last so knew what I needed to win the event

105kg log for reps was first and the highest total was 6 so knew this would be easy enough to do and did 7 in 30 seconds strict to take the first event. was probably good for 12 plus

Next was 120kg farmers for 40 meters and was last out so knew what I needed to beat again, fastest time was 20.60 and was looking for sub 20 really but with not really doing much farmers in training wasn't sure what would happen, first 20 meters was easy and quick, dropped turned and picked up and got going again but think I had my hands in the wrong place as the farmers crossed over which stopped me from excelerating, managed to finish in 20.1 which was good enough for he event win but should be much quicker really

235kg axel deadlift for reps was next and the highest number was 6 reps so was confident of bettering this and did 7 to take the 3rd event in a row. was probably good for 14 plus. First 3 events took about an hour so everything was turning around pretty quickly

320kg yoke for 20 meters was next, hadn't gone above 250kg ish in training as was focusing more on speed in training. 14 seconds was the quickest time and I completed in just over 10 seconds, wanted sub 10 really but maybe not doing some heavier yoke told slightly

Going into the last event I had already secured the comp win so didn't really need to do the event but did the two kegs and two sandbags and moved the duck walk a meter or two before leaving it

Overall was 1st and qualified for the final, was fairly satisfied with what I did but didn't really need to push it much on anything which is a good thing with Englands 105kg being this weekend.

thanks to Ben for putting on a very well run comp and also well done to those who qualified for the final

Resting up all this week and saving myself for Englands on Sunday, hopefully hit atleast top5, maybe podium

kirkynick said:Well done, John.

Are there really so few natural strongmen around?

I think there is a lot more but I think alot were put off by the 320kg yoke as I saw a few moaning on the facebook page setup for it a while back. Plus it could just be down to cost, £35 membership and £25 to enter for potentially doing one comp, there are some really tight people in strongman

Englands Strongest Man U105kg

Weighed in day before on scales at home was 104.4 naked and 106kg fully clothed so set off to newbury to get weighed in, got there jumped on the scales and was 102kg fully clothed, so scales were a good 3/4 kg out which annoyed really as had to dehydrate abit the night before and I didnt really need to based on how much the scales were out

120kg Log Press for Reps
Came to the first event and everyone was warming up log and one log seemed alot heavier than the other when they were both apparently 70kg, both logs were weighed and were 13kg different? The weights were changed slightly so they should both have the same total weight and I was on the heavier log and only managed 3 reps and really struggled with the clean as well as the press. Ive done 10 in training so no idea what went wrong on this event. Everyone stuggled on the one log wherease everyone was repping OK on the other. Ended up 3 or 4th from last on what should have been one of my best events. So head was up by arse by this point

260kg Deadlift for Reps
Came to deadlift and was one of the first ones out and managed to tweak my hamstring in warmup so that was in the back of my mind. Managed 7 reps and my hamstring just gave way, was nothing else there so didnt event try to attempt anymore. Think I was joint 4th or 5th, winning amount was 12 I think by Ben K, think someone got 10 and 9 and one of two got 8

340kg Yoke for 30m
Coming into yoke was about 5th last out so was able to watch a number of others go out first and everyone appeared to struggle with the weight and a number didnt finish and one of two did in a slowish time so knew I could get a lot of points back on this event. It was drop and turn at 15 and managed to complete in 20 seconds which put me into the lead by about 10 seconds and the time was only beaten by ben K, so came 2nd, this was more like it

320kg Conans Wheel
Going into Conans had praticed this a fare bit in training so knew this should be a decent event for me and managed about 3 and a half turns which I think was good enought for 3/4th place, so this put into contention for 3rd overall, think I was 5th overall at this point with 6/7 points back to 6th and only 3 points off third with 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th all close on points

280kg Frame plus 550kg Wheel Barrow 15m each
Knew I needed a really good time on this event and all the times were fairly close with most people finishing the course. Not done frame in the build up and not tried the wheel barrow before so was just watching what others did and tried to pick things up as they went along. Frame was an easy pickup and did it easily emough and the picked the wheelbarrow up and nearly stumbled and dropped part way down due to hitting my feet on the front of it but managed to keep it going and complete in the 20 seconds which put me into the lead, think richard Minney beat by less than half a second and ben wont by a further 4 seconds so good enough for 3rd.

I thought I had finished 5 overall as I didnt think I had picked up enough points on the other above me to get into the top 3 but was surprised to find that 3 of us were tied on the same points for 3rd and I was lucky enough to take it on countback which was totally unexpected after such a bad start on log, think I was 2 points off 2nd and Ben K wont every event so was well ahead overall.

Overall im thrilled with taking 3rd after such a bad start on log but obviously afterwards was thinking if only I didnt mess up log so much it might have been a higher placing to take 2nd but cant complain. It made me realise afterwards that in the past I have let my head drop after a bad event and its affected the next event and even the one after that so in future I will be in a different mind set if I have a bad event and just remember to forget about it and move on to the next event

Thanks to Craig for putting on a well run comp, well to Ben K on the win, dont think it was ever in daoubt, whish he would stick to opens Wink and Richard Minney on 2nd who I know has trained really hard and deserves his 2nd place. Also special mention to Richard Birhmore who was very unlucky in tearing his callous on the frame, without that think he was nailed on for 2nd/3rd place

Having a few days off training and will have a couple of light weeks before deciding what to do next
