Can we tempt you to have a go at the NW unequipped? I should have a couple of smaller women at around your standard (although a little heavier) both doing arouind 200kg. It would be nice to see as many as possible. Presumably you won't get the chance to lift with other women very often.

Eek

I really don't think I have got it in me to be honest. Too stressful, i'd be a nervous wreck. I get nervous just attempting PB's in the gym if I think about it too much, so a comp would just be too overwhelming. Plus, my cycles are all over the place, so its not like i'll be anywhere near ready for a comp in 6 weeks.

I wouldn't mind coming to train over at yours for a couple of sessions though (if that is not way too cheeky of me to ask); you are right that I don't get to lift with other women very often. I'm the only female fish in the sugden pond!

I can assure you everyone is nervous before their first competition. As I recall I had very little sleep and spent the first 20 mins of the comp day decorating the porcelain if you know what I mean!!
My advice to anyone is turn up and have a go. One things for sure your second comp will be a hell of a lot easier.
Pete did really well on his first outing and I bet he wishes he'd done it years ago.

I think you should do it Jo.

Nearly everyone gets nervous going for PBs in the gym, so that's not really a factor. Plus if you compete I'm sure there will be a lot of friendly faces there cheering you on.

Not having your cycles matching up to the comp isn't really a big problem either, just play it by ear and chop and change at the end as you have to. A few of the lads at Adlington are likely to be doing it but won't be changing their existing routines... Joe's is geared towards the British equipped in the summer for example.

I don't like to pressure anyone but I would say that you should probably discount the nerves reason - I always feel really nervous in competition but it's helped me more than hindered me. You might find that you put your big lifts up better in competition than in the gym.

It would, obviously, be tremendously hypocritical of me to tell you to do it - but aren't you just a teeny bit tempted to turn up and do your qualifying total as easy openers? I mean, 60/35/100 qualifies you for the nationals, and you could do, what, fives with those?

It's your choice Jo, if you compete you know you'll have our support!

But just because you could compete doesn't mean you are obliged to, of course. Don't worry about it.

Yes - what he said. Which I meant to say and didn't.

Shutting up now!

Rick makes a good point;- if you are nervous you can start by picking weights in competition which are well within your means.

Your training then is aimed at increasing strength to improve your one rep max. and improving on the day performance so that you get closer to your one rep max.

The best way of dealing with competition day nerves is to get used to comps.

As for not having time to peak for the comp;- what sort of cycles are you following? I could peak for a comp. in less time.

You are welcome to come over for some coaching - the same invitation extends to everyone. We are going to run some training camps anyway later in the year, but before then you can come to Salford Uni. on a wednesday afternoon or Powerhouse Gym Brierfield on a saturday. Let me know if you want to come over and we will arrange.

Out of interest, Jim, if you have time to write a brief reply, how would you peak for a comp?

For an abbreviated cycle - if you were already in off-season training my squat could go;

week
1 320 x 5
2 340 x 3
3 360 x 2
4 370 x 2
5 380 x 2

I would use a similar system for bench although this would be a little heavier compared with competition day attempts.

Light days would include band work - tight bands + 230-250 on the squat 1-2 sets of 2 reps after warm-up.

Band work for bench - up to 170 + bands - we vary the band tension from moderate to insane in order to stress different parts of the lift- this is a little like rack work but with a full range of movement.

DL I only train once per week, and I never go heavy in training - but I have achronically bad back so I have to be cautious. I use more assistance work for DL for this reason. I like heavy weighted reverse hyperextensions - but I gues you young guns will probably do good mornings instead. When I am fit enough to do them them I rate sumo stance squats as a good assistance for sumo DL.

I know many consider the idea of cycling weights up to a competition to be old fashioned now, but the alternatives that I have read of seem to require far too much volume. The Westside approach is not without its merits but you must remember it was not designed by or for drug-free lifters.

It's interesting to see how you train Jim. Do you tend to use bands regularly then? I have read they can be very hard on your joints if used for more than a month consecutively?

Will you be doing the unequipped yourself? Or are you preparing for the British Masters perhaps?

That's very interesting, thanks Jim!

Do you keep a log anywhere? It'd be interesting to see another take on how a very very strong guy trains.
