Dolly | How much cement? | 16-10-2012 @ 22:42
hello dolly ! Member 1778, 114 posts SQ 170, BP 134, DL 210514.0 kgs @ 97kgs UnEq | I'm gonna fill a couple of barrels this week with cement and wondered how much cement does it take to make a weight of around 80kg? ( I hope to Christ I haven't just answered my own question)

Would he not be adding any water to the mixture? I reckon 3:1 would need about 10-15litres or so of water, so he'd have a bit left over.

hello dolly ! Member 1778, 114 posts SQ 170, BP 134, DL 210514.0 kgs @ 97kgs UnEq | Looks like I'll just buy some bags of ready mix and guesstimate the weight. Has anyone here filled any barrels lately?

I would be reluctant to only partially fill it with cement, as it would ne very lop sided. I think you can make the small ones up to close to 120 with sand, so full with cememnt would be pretty heavy

It's all about relative density. Concrete is about 2,400kg per Cubic metre, so 2.4kg per Cubic litre. Water is 1.0kg per cubic litre. for 80kg of mix, you'd need 33.3 Cubic litres of cement. A 10 litre bucket will hold 24kg of cement when full to the brim, so you'd need a little over 3 of these. I'd be willing to bet it'll take a while to set as it's in a confined space. As water will be lost during the curing process, i'd go a little OVER and make it about 90kg when wet to account for water loss.

Good answer, although if you used lightweight aggregate in the mix then the density would be less. If we knew the rough volume of the keg then we'd know rough weight I suppose
