Yeah I keep being advised to do that but lecturing at a University is the ultimate goal. Love science too much, love doing research and love University...

If you love it that much then go down the PhD route. You'll get a funded position eventually whether it be with or without a master's degree. If I had loved my degree more then I probably would've chosen that option as well. The academics I know live a pretty comfortable life doing something that they have a passion for.

Absolutely, if you want to be an academic go for the PhD.

Have done with no success so far haha, but that doesn't mean I won't try again...

I had a Sports Science degree and spent a couple of years in the abyss. I did what John suggests and trained to become a teacher (I did the GTP rather than a PGCE though).

Each to there own, I commend those who go to uni and put the work in when it's what they want to do in life.

I had uni offers from my chosen universities and was so close to going until something told me it wasn't right me. I backed out with a few months to go and looking back it was the best thing for me.

I'm 26 nearly 27 and a good 90% of my mates that went to uni are back living at home either still bumming about struggling to find work or in some s**t job with a load of student debt.

In contrast I feel I've done so much more in life already. I'm in a well paid, secure job, about to buy my first house with the missus. I cannot imagine been back living with parents struggling to find work, that said, if uni is what you wanted to do then fair play.

How are you finding it? Is it what you expected?

If I were in your position I would do either, or possibly both, of these things;

1) Get a job in a local pub / bar frequented by attractive young ladies. Work there of an evening, go to after-parties and finger birds of a night, sleep late and train of an afternoon.

2) Go travelling. See above for partying and fingering.

As John said, avoid getting a real job too soon.

I did a masters this year. I think most undergrad degrees are just too general and emphasise unnecessary theory without practical application. I would say do a masters and if you don't want to continue the Phd route, having the masters will give you an edge in knowledge and will make finding a job a lot easier.

I can relate to this. Most of my friends left school at 16 and became apprentices. By the time I was finishing Uni most of them had their own businesses and had their own gaffs. Some of them now are millionaires, who own multiple properties, while I struggle by on my teachers' salary...

Sounds like you're having a great crack mate and good for you! My two best friends didn't go to University, one an apprentice mechanic and one an apprentice plummer... now whenever we go anywhere they turn up in their convertible BMW/Audis and I tag along in my banged up Citroen. It's clear who was the student.

On the other hand, my missus (so any suggestions to go fingering I'm afraid I'll have to pass on lol) went straight from Uni into a job doing diagnostic radiography but is pissed that she never had the chance to bum round/travel.

Sat in your boat right now pal, applied for PhD without success and undergrad is neither use nor ornament despite getting a good degree so a masters it is!

Msc is a good step if you want into the phd- academic world as there is huge compeition for phd positions. Have a chat with the academics on your MSc from the start about your desired career and there could be extra opportu ities that arise. The academic career can be great!

I was in your position this time last year but thankfully worked my summer job whilst applying for graduate engineering jobs which was nothing but time consuming and boring. I now work in construction earning 2-3 times as much as my mates in various graduate jobs.

Get a job in the construction industry in London and youll be flying!
