Yates has NOT consistently been 250lbs since he retired. He's certainly not let himself go but he ain't been that big.

Haven't both Flex Wheeler AND Tom Prince had kidney transplants? Sad state of affairs when 2 out of a line up of 6-7 have had major kidney problems. Oh, they've both got hereditary conditions.........probably.

I agree too.
Bodybuilding (probably moreso than strongman or other iron sports) is very self indulgent as a hobby and it's only when you move on from it that you see just how selfish a "sport" it is.

I think strongman can be as selfish as bb tbh.

In terms of drugs used, time spent training, and crazy diets, it's just as extreme

Strongman has moved on so much in the past 10 years it's crazy and it's not because there's a new breed of genetic freaks. The drugs used and the length of time they're on them to compete year round is not good imo.

And I'm sure (although I would like to be wrong) that a lot of the guys don't get regular check ups, especially for things like haemocrit levels and psa.

I'm going to have to agree with Savage as much as it pains me. I've watched a few interviews etc with Yates of late, one where he looks small but is 121kg on the scales and he says he never drops below around that weight 265lbs or so.

Grin

Fair enough. I just remember seeing a lot of pictures of him when he first retired and I'd say in most of them he only looked around 14-15 stone at the most. I know lack of perspective can distort things but he certainly did look ~18st.

This is the kind of photo I'm talking about. The guy on the left doesn't look any more than about 13.5st and Dorian doesn't look 4.5st more than him.

He still looks a fair size there.. When I was 19.5 stone I didn't look huge, in fact I looked fairly 'small'

Could be right on flex and prince, dont know but yates has indeed been 250lb+ ripped, theres a bunch of vids online of him training / stating his weight, even of him weighing. Keep in mind he's not one of those 5'5 bodybuilders with the tiny frame. Seen him at expo couple times, was like 260 something and he lifts up his shirt and looked like was 5% lol

Edit - ah, vid above

I always find it odd when people speak about bodybuilders and strength athletes that we know through the online world in terms of the tragic passing of one of them, or how tragic it is that so many die young.

We live in a world of choice. Bodybuilders and strongmen choose to participate in the sport they partake in, and they choose to ingest their chosen quantity of drugs. It's no more tragic than a bullfighter getting gored. If you constantly take risks with your life, chances are it'll bite back one day.

The flipside applies as well. Why is bodybuilding any more selfish than premiership football? The wives/girlfriends etc. choose to spend their life with someone whose passion is moulding their body to a particular shape. If you didn't want to be involved in that - choose someone else to spend your life with.

People make choices. They're big boys (often bigger than most others). They know the potential consequences, and if they don't, they should make it their business to learn about it. I found it interesting that the wives of two high level strongmen who have died, then went on to marry their strongman friends. You'd think if it was such a selfish sport, the wives would vote with their feet and bugger off.

You find it odd that people online who don't know said victim find it tragic? I find that odd to think that.

I think the selfish bit is referring to the crazy drug use as well. Selfish in terms of risking their health, which yes, is selfish, when it means your risking leaving the earth prematurely, only to leave family and friends devastated.

Maybe I see things differently. As far as I'm concerned, if someone I don't hold dear to me decides to pursue a life choice that ultimately ends in their death (which was always a potential risk) then that's not tragic, it's just a part of life.

Are bodybuilders more selfish than soldiers?

I think there's several other aspects to the selfish element. When BBing I would extremely rigid in terms of both eating and training, very rarely being willing to miss a gym session (which involved 4 weights sessions/week and 7/low intensity cardio sessions/week when dieting) and pretty much NEVER being willing to miss a meal so both mine and the ex-wifes lives revolved around MY training. Hardly conducive to a mutually respectful relationship!

When I was dieting for a comp I'd be a downright miserable t**t for probably the last 8-weeks at least. I literally wouldn't speak to her other than the odd grunt, wouldn't have the energy to do any jobs around the house or anything other than go to the gym and sort my own meals out.

She didn't ask to sign up for that as I wasn't actually competing when we first met.

I'd be amazed if most other sportspeople are quite this bad and I wasn't unusual in my attitude/demeanor compared to other competitive BBers I know/knew.
