Yesterday, I was performing the art of a pullup in the gym and out of the corner of my eye I noticed something untoward. A rather lanky fellow had placed a rolled up towel on his back and had loaded a barbell with 180kg on it. I felt it may either be highly impressive or highly entertaining, so took this opportunity to observe.

He proceeded to unrack the barbell from its home in the open rack, took a couple steps back and set himself. He continued on to bend his knees slightly allowing a maximum descent of no more than 3 inches. As he finished his set of 3, i started clapping. He unracked the bar and turned around.

"You can't be serious?" I interjected.
"Huh..." was his reply with a confused look on his face.
"You can't be calling those squats."
"Oh right, you see I'm a long jumper, so we only need to do half squats."
"Mate, I'll give you a maximum of 1/32 for the depth of those "squats". "

He performed those squats not only through a 3" ROM, but also extremely slowly, ( I may not have much knowledge of long jump as a sport, but somehow i don't think that's how they should be training). His next exercise was a step up on to a very low box, which proved to heavy for him and he dropped the weight on to the pins.


So, my question to you is... "Am I a dick?"

Yes.

Whilst the concern and critique was not without reason, the clapping puts you right in the category marked 'Dick'.

In situations like these I try to offer help to maybe improve said persons knowledge and technique. Sometimes they are gracious and take heed, sometimes they refuse. In this case they can be downgraded to dick status.

No your not, I see people in the gym I go to way overloading the bar and doing partial dangerous reps cos they don't know what they're doing and I feel obliged to point out what they're doing wrong before they really injure themselves. Not my gym or really my place to say but looking back when I first started training and didn't have a f**king clue I wish someone would have pointed stuff out to me.

Hope your back gets better, although it has allowed my mate to take your place at Celtic carnage Grin

I dunno... thinking about the angles involved when the foot strikes the floor, I would say something like this could be a valid exercise IF they were performed very dynamically AND were supplementing a proper squat routine...

Unless your actually a longjumper yourself or have experience of training for the sport then I think you have to give this guy the benefit of the doubt and assume he knows what hes doing. Ive just started practising yoke pick ups by loading a smith machine with 300k + ( a weight I cant yet full squat) and performing what at best could be called a quarter squat , this is after ive already done full squats in the power rack ( different room ) Whilst a few people have asked what Im doing nobody has taken the piss and I wouldnt expect them to , each to their own Cool

The correct procedure is....

1. Chuckle to yourself while watching him, but don't comment.
2. Start a thread about it on Sugden as soon as you get home.

You almost got it right.

Yes! If someone I didnt know,or had ever spoke too, took the piss/tried to belittle me in such a manner, I'd fell pretty obliged to drop them tbh

At least some good has come from it lol it's on the men's but not for feb lol

I can see what you're saying but he wasn't supplementing
A full squat routine, it was his squat routine, it was also very slow and ugly.

I can see how the clapping was a bit far just kind of

Well you asked for opinions and that is mine . I`ve always been tought to help and encourage people and i don`t think that was your objective was it .

This is true I did ask for opinions, thanks for expressing yours, I was simply responding in the same aggressive tone you used towards me in your post. I did try and advise him re: squatting to a full depth and had actually done the same half an hour earlier for someone squatting high but nt as high.
He brushed off any advice with his response regarding long jumping and having to squat like a dick munch
