Yoke (using a strengthshop yoke which is possibly the most unstable yoke in the world)

Worked up to various speed runs at 260 and 300kg. Fine and quick but nothing exciting.

Arm over arm

All weights are approximate as we don't know the exact weight of the prowler but guessed it's about 60kg.

250kg x 12m
290kg x 2 runs of 12m
250kg x 12m
150kg x 12m

Arm over arm was decent, I don't think I will ever be brilliant at arm over arm but I am certainly a lot better than I was. My second heavy run was my best one and the lighter ones after it were just working on speed and technique.

Yeah bud that's the one, 300kg on that one felt like 400kg on a proper yoke. The weight was good but need to be a wee bit quicker dave.

Deadlift

Up to 262.5kg x 1 (should have been 2)

Assistance x some

Pretty poor session today, wasn't feeling it for a number of reasons and should be hitting that double comfortably. However given how s**t I was feeling before the session I am surprised to get the single at 262.5kg and although it felt hard looking at the video it was quite quick. Hoping to get a better session in tomorrow and be back on form.

Log

Worked up to 3 sets of 2 at 100kg

CGBP

80kg x 5
100kg x 5
Add slingshot
100kg x 5
120kg x 2 sets of 5
140kg x 2 singles

Still feeling a bit under the weather so not a stellar session today. First time doing any bench in a long time and my strength seems to be much the same. I've had worse sessions but should still be better, need to have a good week next week as it is my last training week before my comp.

Tuesday 26 may

Deadlifts x some. Pretty poor.

Wednesday 27 may

Log x some.
Slingshot bench x some
Triceps x some. Better than Tuesday but still pretty ordinary.

Thursday 28 may

Arm over arm. Did this with the sled and the new rope I got at the farm. It is safe to say that it sucked all kinds of ass. Not a fan of arm over arm at the best of times but the fact that the rope was new meant that most of your pull was just taking the stretch out of it. In spite of that I did 3 heavy runs of just under 20m and a lighter one and think my technique is better as a result. In summary decidedly unpleasant but felt better for it.

Tyre flip

310kgish tyre x 3 sets of 4 flips, tough going with the grip as it was full of water but fairly decent technique wise.

Stones to 54"

Worked up to

160kg x 2 singles
120kg x 3

Good stones today, the 160 is starting to feel fairly straightforward, just struggle for height a bit as 54" is high for a short arse like me.

That will be my last heavy session before ssm u105 a week on Sunday and happy to finish on a good one. Not happy with my preparation for it as I think I peaked too early (about 3 weeks ago) and have been feeling worn out since. Hopefully with a good rest next week I can get back into some better form for the comp. I will need all the help I can get as I am working till 3am the night before and have to weigh in at 9 after a 3 hour drive. It should be good prep for ssm in July anyway and I would still hope to take some scalps on a few events.

Monday 1 june

Suited deadlifts up to 290kg. Form was a bit raggedy as I wasn't used to the suit but weights are reasonable.

Tuesday 2 june

Log up to some singles at 100kg and some Incline Log. Nothing too crazy today.

Now time to rest up for Sunday and try to watch my eight as I think I am right on 105kg at the moment.

Sunday 7 June - Scotland's Strongest Man u105

I managed to get the Sunday off for this comp but was unfortunately unable to get the previous day off. As a result I was working till 3am on the Saturday night then up at 0550 to drive down to Motherwell for the comp. In spite of that I felt ok when I got up, got there good and early and managed to weigh in at 104 and a bit kgs (had to stop drinking at 5 the previous evening to do this though). After weigh in got some food and water on and got ready for the first event.

First up was the arm over arm which was with a 7.5 tonne truck. I was fifth out and managed to see where other guys went wrong as it was quite a tricky set up with a huge tyre in front of you which prevented you getting long pulls in. I got it going well and put in a pretty steady run of 50 seconds on the nose. This was good for about 7th or 8th place and far better than I was expecting it to go as arm over arm is generally one of my poorer events.

Next was a medley of 4 flips of a tyre, they said it was 360kg but I think it was nearer to 330 or so, load a 120kg keg and a 120kg sack then 4 more flips of the tyre. Got my first 3 flips of the tyre no problem then fumbled the fourth several times. I kept getting it up on my knee then having my foot slip out from under me while I tried to re-grip. I think this was partly down to the extremely dusty/slippy floor and possibly poor choice of footwear from me. Eventually got the fourth flip and the keg loaded radially but ran out of time/energy on the sack so only got a measurement for it. That put me in second last.

The next event was deadlift for reps at 260kg with no suits allowed. The warm ups felt heavy an I wasn't feeling too confident as my raw deadlift hasn't been wonderful of late. Ended up getting 2 reps and missing a third just below my knees which is a common sticking point for me. This put me somewhere around 6th or so equal with a few others on 2 reps.

After the intermission was car walk at 320kg. I came in expecting this to be a really good event for me as yoke is my favourite event. How wrong I was. I just couldn't get to grips with this event at all, there seemed to be a few balance issues with the cars but I just couldn't seem to find a good pick up point for it. As a result I only managed around 4 or 5 metres. A lot of guys got similar distances to that with only 3 guys going over 10m. Dunno where I placed but think it must have been the lower end of mid table.

Next was max log opening at 105kg. My pressing has come on a bit recently and 105kg should be a comfortable weight for me. I went out having not chalked my hands and made a hash of the clean on my first two attempts due to the newly painted slippy handles, I chalked up an went for it again but rushed it and was nowhere near on the press as I was thrown off a bit by the big awkward wide handled log. 0 points and last place because of stupid little easily avoidable errors on my part.

The final event was predictably stone's loaded onto the back of a flatbed truck, they were 120, 135, 150, 165 and 180kg. I was in 12th going in but able to climb some places with a good run. I was also hoping for a good run as my stones have been going very well of late. Popped the first three up in a fairly pedestrian time and moved onto the 165 stone. Fumbled it on my first attempt then lapped it easily before promptly falling over and running out of time. Another disappointing event as the 165kg stone shouldn't be causing me any real issues.

Came 12th overall, quite disappointed with my placing but can't blame anyone other than myself as it is all down to silly mistakes both on the day and in the lead up to the comp. Just need to write it off as a bad day at the office, dust myself off and get myself ready for the naturals in 2 weeks and the open ssm final in 6 weeks.

Unlucky Neil. It looked a tough comp and the standard is getting silly. The weights wouldn't have looked out of place at wsm a few years ago.
Have a few days rest a bit of training then come up and break yourself on the conans at the nattys.

Cheers dave, mostly just a sub par performance from me unfortunately.

Saturday 13 June

Headed back to the gym today. Messed up something in my right trap doing car walk which has developed from a dull ache at the time to causing me issues with day to day tasks such as driving. Also feel like both bicep tendons are going to snap after all the bicep heavy stuff at the comp on Sunday. However got another comp in a week that I can't really sit out as I am one of only 4 competitors so thought I'd best see how I got on today.

Just did a bit of log up to 100kg x 2 ftoh. Not an impressive weight but encouraging as it didn't bother my trap much so should hopefully be able to at least put in some sort of token effort at most events at the naturals next week. Will rest up till Monday before trying deadlifts and hopefully that won't bother my trap either.

Monday 15 June

Deadlifts up to 210kg and a fail at 230kg. Turns out that my injured trap prevents me from deadlifting even mediocre weights. So it looks like my comp on Sunday will see me just there to make up numbers, hopefully my trap will improve a bit and I will manage to get a token rep in on deadlift.

Spent most of my time at the gym today herding cows and moving fences/the cattle crush and almost certainly got more work in from doing that than I did from lifting.

Had scotland's natural strongest man u105 today. I had been bothered with an injured trap in the lead up so was unsure how I would get on, however it didn't really cause me any issues during the comp. Weighed in fine and early and comfortably made weight.

First event was 105kg for log press for reps. I knew this wasn't going to be my best event but was hoping for at least a couple. Got my first rep in quite comfortably then made a hash of the second and couldn't quite lock it out, composed myself and got one more rep in. 2 reps and equal second place. A bit disappointed that I missed my second rep but not too unhappy considering my epic failure at this weight in the comp two weeks ago.

Next was 120kg farmers for 30m with no drops and walking the turn. I knew this would be a poor one for me, this is entirely my own fault though as I have known about this event for months and did minimal training on the turn. This showed on the event as I got the turn in and dropped it soon after. Fortunately for me one of the other competitors set off too quick and went down after about a metre so I avoided last place.

We then had 230kg Axle deadlift for reps. I pulled 6 reps for third place. Gassed out a bit on this one and I think my lungs gave up on me before my back. Again my own fault as I haven't done enough rep work in training lately.

We had a bit of a break due to the rain before going out to do the conans wheel. I knew I had underperformed a bit up to this stage and needed a good performance to get things back on track. It was 210kg on the pins and I set off nice and quick and got just over 2 revolutions. Dave came out after that and went just past my mark so it was good for second place.

Last up was the stones ranging from 110-150kg in 10kg jumps. I was half a point off of second place going in but was feeling quietly confident as my stones have been OK of late. Raced through the first 3 in a quick time, took a bit longer on the fourth and fifth but got both up comfortably. I was the only one to get the 150kg stone up, won the event and secured second place.

I enjoyed my day today (except the conans, that sucked a big bag of dicks) although it was a day of ups and downs. The stuff I didn't train cost me so I have no one to blame but myself however managed to pull things back on the last 2 events and get second place. Dave was a deserving winner as he was very consistent all day and I am sure he will continue his good form in the big comps he has coming up later in the year.

I have to thank dave and all the rest of the crew in Huntly for putting on such a good comp and hopefully this will be the first of many natural comps in Scotland.

Thursday 25 june

First one back after the comp on Sunday.

Log

90kg x 3
100kg x 2
80kg x 2 sets of 8

Incline log

95kg x 2 sets of 5

Some other light stuff but nothing worth logging.

A fairly easy first session to ease back into things.

Did some deadlifting on Friday but it was a bit of a write off and not even worth logging.

Monday 29 june

Back training with Ben at the farm and good to have someone to push me on again.

Log

95kg x 3
100kg x 2 (timing was way off on these sets and made them a lot harder than they should have been)

80kg x 8,8,6, experimented with a push jerk on the last set and was easy enough but a bit unstable.

Slingshot bench

110kg x 2 sets of 5
100kg x a set of 8 and a set of 10

Band pushdowns

Heavy Band x 3 sets of 12

Front raises

20kg x 3 sets of 10

Pretty decent session all in all, nothing crazy weight wise but got some good rep work in.

Wednesday 1 July

Deadlift (suited)

250kg x 2
270kg x 1

Suit off

210kg x 2 sets of 5

2" deficit speed pulls

170kg x 5 sets of 3

Box squat (didn't measure it but about parallel)

140kg x 2 sets of 5
120kg x 8, (these all felt harder than I expected, first time box squatting in a while though I guess)

A decidedly hard, hot and sweaty session today. Dunno what's going on with my suited pulls, don't seem to be getting much if anything from the suit at all but hopefully with a bit more practice I will manage to get sorted out. Not a bad session though.
