Happy new year to you too John. I am indeed still in the police. The job market was a bit slow when i was applying for stuff and now the arse has fallen out of the north sea oil industry and people are getting laid off all over the shop so i am probably better off where I am for now as my job is secure.

Wednesday 7 January

Squat

180kg x 4 sets of 4
150kg x 2 sets of 8

Deadlift

220kg x 3 sets of 3

2" deficit speed deadlift

160kg x 6 sets of 2

Took it a little bit easier today as my back is still a bit tight. I think one of the biggest issues with my back comes from work and driving for hours at a time wearing my stab vest with all my cuffs and such attached. Got a bit of work in today, hopefully I will manage to up the weights on squat and deadlift as time goes on.

112kg x a set of 3 and a set of 2(failed the 3d rep as I caught it funny on the way down and nearly broke both my wrists)

Band assisted x 2 sets of 10

Nothing world beating in today's session but reasonable numbers. Need to keep working on my technique for both Axle and DB jerks as shown in the vids below.

Yeah the tech was reasonable dave but could still do with some improvements to get the Axle a bit snappier and not go walkabout with it overhead.

Saturday 10 January

Back in for some events today with Ben and solbjorn

Farmers into sled drag

75kg farmers for 36m into 160kg sled drag for 16m x 3 runs through. All fast on the farmers and slow on the sled, also did all 3 runs in a gale while it was snowing fairly heavily.

Axle

Hadn't intended to press again but Ben and sol were so just worked in with them.

92kg x 3 pushpresses
102kg x 2 jerks
112kg x 2 sets of 2 jerks
122kg x fail, made a bit of a hash of the clean.

Stones

105kg x 3
120kg x 3
135kg x 3, all reps were one motioned except the last one at 135.

A reasonable session. Farmers were super light but my hands weren't really working in the snow so probably best to keep it light, decent cardio too.

Hard going today having just finished a block of nightshifts this morning. Just went in and did the minimum I needed to do. Still fairly happy with the session and got a bit of work in.

Squats and deadlifts up at the farm with Ben and Sol again.

I had intended to keep the volume low as I will be doing frame squats and deadlifts on Saturday but it didn't work out that way. Solid session tonight and I am quite happy with my sets at 240kg.

Did some light high rep bodybuilding type stuff but nothing else worth logging. Happy with a triple at 100kg on the log as I don't think I have done that since before my sabbatical from lifting last year. Still not world beating numbers overhead but getting a wee bit better.

Pressing and deadlifts are looking decent, you doing any of the 105s this year? There's gonna be an abundance of comps by the looks of it.

Cheers bud. Had planned to do the ssm qualifier in March, the naturals and got my name down for both 105 ones posted yesterday. However this may not be feasible financially or in terms of recovery/training time between comps so I may end up having to prioritise and just pick a few comps. I may not be able to get time off for the ssm qualifier so that might stop me doing that and make me just concentrate on u105 comps.

You planning to compete much this year?

Yeah I can see there being a period where they're all quite close together and that's without taking in to account other comps that the likes of Results might be running.

I haven't competed in well over a year but I've put my name down for the SSM 105s. Gonna wait and see when the other qualifiers are for the SFN and tie in with Ryan and Darryn, travel's the main issue given we're in the arse end of nowhere. Last year was pretty mince overall, lost interest in strength training, dieted down, niggle after niggle etc and I ended the year with an operation on my back to remove a pilonidal sinus. Back training with the boys this week though and I'm feeling pretty damn fired up for it!

Saturday 17 January

Down at results with Ben to play about with the frame ahead of the ssm qualifier.

Frame deadlift (all weights refer to the weight on the pins and don't count the frame itself)

Rising bar

270, 290, 310 and 330kg
290, 310 and 330kg, failed 350 at the knees

Straight weight

310kg x 4

Frame squat (just weight on the pins again)

Suit with straps down

240kg x 4

Straps up

290kg x 5, got my foot positioning wrong and these were slightly high. I have however seen higher squats get passed at Strongman comps.

That was all for today as it takes ages to get the frame set up. Happy with my lifts today, squat should be a good one for me at the qualifier if I manage to get time off and go.

240kg x 1, was meant to be 3 but decided to switch from rounded upper back to straight upper back mid rep and made hard work of it.

Speed deadlift

180kg x 5 sets of 3

Kept the volume very low tonight as I am off on my holidays on Saturday and don't fancy a 10 hour flight with a horrible back pump. 260kg is the most I have deadlifted since coming back to training late last year and it wasn't the hardest lift I've ever done. A reasonable session but looking forward to my two weeks off from training and reckon my body will probably appreciate the rest.

Did a quick session at the ymca gym while away on holiday. All weights will be a couple of kgs higher than posted as they were in pounds and I just did a rough conversion.

Back home from holidays and back into training. Was straight back to work about 15 hours after I got home on Friday so still pretty shattered but thought I had best make the effort to get back down to the gym.

Monday 9 February

Log (all push press)

Various lifts up to 100kg and a fail at 105kg. Log was a bit haphazard tonight, pretty poor really.

Strict Log

80kg x a set of 5, a 4 and a 3, started off ok but the shoulders burned out pretty quickly.

Incline Log

80kg x 5
100kg x 3

Chins

Db lateral raises

Band pushdowns

And that was all she wrote. A pretty poor session but I wasn't expecting much in my first one back. Hopefully manage to make a better stab at deadlifts on Wednesday.
