Friday 3 July

My legs were still buckled after Wednesday's session and 5 hours of hillwalking the following day (carrying my 1 year old son for most of it.) so wasn't really up for training.

Seated military press

60kg x 5
70kg x 5
60kg x 8
50kg x 10

Log pushjerks

75kg x 5
85kg x 3
95kg x 2, struggling with leg drive.

Did various biceps and such but nothing exciting.

Monday 6 July

Log pushjerks

75kg x 5
80kg x 3
90kg x 3
100kg x 2
105kg x 1

Stones

Did various stuff up to 135kg and numerous attempts of varying degrees of success at 160kg. It was too hot in the shed and my tacky was like water so really struggled with the stones today.

Wednesday 8 july

Spent most of the day herding and inoculating cows up at the farm but managed to get some quick deadlift training in with Ben while waiting on the vet.

Suited deadlift

230kg x 2
250kg x1, nice and quick
270kg x 2 singles, not slow but not as quick as I would like
250kg x 2 sets of 2

Speed deadlift

170kg x 3 sets of 3

SLDL

120kg x 3 sets of 8

Reasonable if slightly haphazard session due to stopping a couple of times to see to cows. My suited deadlifts still aren't anywhere near where I want them to be but not terrible I suppose. That was my last heavy deadlift session before ssm so will need to see how it goes on the day.

Log

Worked up to 100kg for 4 or 5 doubles. Mostly push jerks with a few push presses in there. Form was decent enough.

Last heavyish pressing session before scotland's strongest man next Sunday. Hopefully I'll manage to get the opener at the Scottish.

Saturday 11 July

Made the trip down to motherwell for another go of the car walk before the Scottish next week. Headed down the road and got pretty much straight out of my car and into the car walk.

Car walk. About 300kg or so. The car has had a fair bit of work done on it since the 105s and felt far better today. Did a couple of short runs to get the feel of it, think I set off too quick on the first run and took too big steps/rushed a bit on the second. I also jarred my back/bottom right rib on the second run. Nothing too terrible but left it there to be safe. A lot happier with the car walk now and hopefully should get on OK with it next week.

Loading medley of 90, 100 and 130kgs and a 120kgish sandbag. Got the first two kegs easily. Got the bag up to the platform but it was quite high and just couldn't get enough height to load it. Then went back for the heavy keg which felt very heavy, wasn't quick but got it loaded. Fairly poor to be honest and think I was still trying to get my head in the game after the long drive down.

We then did stones with a run of 105,115,120,130 and 150kg. Popped the first 4 up quickly but couldn't get the last one lapped so had to re tacky and then loaded it easy enough. I was the fastest through four of the guys there (other than cherrie and pollock) I think, just hindered slightly on the fifth one by the clouds of dust coming up when the previous stone came off the platform and hit the deck.

Had a quick go of Martins new hercules hold set up but was just getting a bit of a feel for it.

First two events weren't brilliant today, I think my main problem was just rolling straight out of the car after two and a half hours driving and getting stuck in with no real warm up. Probably not the brightest idea really.

However quite happy with my stones and generally looking forward to next week now. Just time to rest up, eat plenty and see how things go at the final.

So I had the scotland's strongest man final yesterday. My prep had been fairly mediocre but I was relaxed going in as I was happy to have just made it to the final and wanted to just enjoy myself rather than worry about my placing too much.

Got there fairly early after the long drive down to motherwell. Had the rules briefing from Stuart and then got a chance to try out a few pick ups on the human wheelbarrow event. This was tough to get the balance right and get the people sitting right.

Unfortunately on one of these pick ups I pulled my right bottom intercostal muscle again. This is a niggling problem that flared up last week and does so sporadically every so often. I was worried this would spoil my whole comp but had to just push on and see how I got on.

First event was max deadlift. I got the 250 and 275kg easily but failed the 290kg. Not overly happy with the event but not last. The winner pulled 382.5kg and 6 guys pulled 360 so the standard was amazing in this event.

Max log was next and it opened at 120kg which is above my pb. Predictably I failed this and wasn't even close to be honest. This was a bit rushed as they were trying to speed things up as the deadlift took so long but I don't think I would have pressed it if I had all day to prepare.

We then had a loading medley of 3 x 120kg sacks and a 125kg keg. The platform was quite small so I knew I would have to watch and leave enough space. Did the keg and the first two bags but was tight on space for the last one and ended up having to perch it quite precariously on the corner and wasted a bit of time. Still quite happy to finish it in a reasonable time. Again the standard was super high with some guys doing it in about 22 seconds so I got quite poor points again.

After a short break was the car walk. I was really worried about this as it had bothered my injured side last week. I wore two belts with one around my chest to try and protect it. As it happened my intercostal wasn't bothered by the car. Didn't finish the course but got most if the way down and picked up some points. This was my best performance of the day.

We then had the human wheelbarrow. This one did bother my side in a big way and I only got about a metre or so and last place. On the plus side this was the only event that bothered my side.

Last up was stones of 135, 150, 165, 180 and 200. There were two sets of stones, one was stuarts which are great stones and the other were pretty much brand new and covered in dust. I put tacky on them before I started but it made no difference. Got the first two up easily but just couldn't get the third one loaded. Pretty annoyed about this one as everyone who got the better set of stones did better. However that's just part of the sport and luck of the draw I guess.

I finished 14th out of 16 overall so was fairly happy to just avoid last place as the standard was ridiculously high. It was a very long but enjoyable day and saw some impressive displays by the top guys. I was really happy to see my training partner Ben coming 8th in his first final.

Thanks to Stuart and all of his crew who put on the comp yesterday, his comps are always the best run ones I go to.

Now I just need to rest up and eat for a week before getting back in training for Lanarkshire's strongest man in 10 weeks.

A flat 10 mile cycle. Still feeling pretty broken after the weekend but this loosened things off a bit.

Friday 24 july

Back in the gym today. Still got a couple if wee aches and pains but not feeling as bad as I expected given how heavy Sunday was.

Dumbell

61kg x 2
71kg x 1
76kg x 1, just a wee tester as I haven't done dumbell in a while. Easy enough.
51kg x 3 sets of 8, first two sets were 6 on the right then last 2 on the left. On the last set I alternated arms on each rep, I was much quicker when I didn't change hands each rep.

Incline Log

75kg x 3 sets of 10, slightly higher Incline than usual but pretty straightforward, just some reps to get the blood pumping.

Front hold

13kg duck walk handle x 3 holds. Could have probably held on a bit longer but just trying to get my shoulders used to this event as it is in my next comp in 9 weeks.

A fairly solid session for the first one back after the comp. Nothing too strenuous but the reps on dumbell fairly opened the lungs up, planning to gradually increase the weight on my sets of 8 up to the comp weight.

Monday 27 july

Dumbell

56kg x 3 sets of 6 on the right and 3 sets of 3 on the left arm. My left arm is still lagging way behind on dumbell but I think that is a default pb as the most I have ever lifted with my left.

Incline log

75kg x 12
85kg x 2 sets of 8

Forward hold

13kg duck walk x 3 holds.

Nothing too crazy again today but a reasonable enough session.

Tuesday 28 July

17" deadlift

250kg x 2
270kg x 2
290kg x fail, dunno what was going on here as the 270 was easy enough.
280kg x 2, a bit better.
250kg x 5
210kg x 8

2" deficit speed deadlift

170kg x 5 sets of 3

Parallel box squat

120kg x 6
150kg x 3 sets of 5

A pretty decent session today, finding the 17" pulls tough to get started but moving easy enough once the bar gets going. A bit more practice and they should be fine.

Thursday 30 July

Yoke into tyre flip

205kg yoke x 15m run back into 300kg tyre x 4 flips
285kg yoke x 15m run back into 300kg tyre x 4 flips, 2 runs
325kg yoke x 15m run back into 300kg tyre x 4 flips, speed wasn't as fast a I wanted on the yoke so dropped back down.
285kg yoke x 15m run back into 300kg tyre x 4 flips

Just a quick bit of cardio and it had the desired effect and got the lungs going.

Monday 3 August

Was ill all weekend with some sort of flu type bug from Friday onwards and didn't really eat between getting up on Friday and Sunday night. Feeling a bit better today but still pretty weak due to lack of food though so wasn't expecting much.

Dumbbell

50kg x 3 reps each arm
60kg x 1 rep each arm for a left arm pb. My left arm is improving and fairly pleased to know I can do at least one rep with the comp weight for my next one in 8 weeks.
60kg x 2 sets of 5, right arm only. Not as quick as I'd like but expected to be a bit slow having been ill.
50kg x 2 set of 6, left arm only. As above, bit slow.

Incline Log

75kg x 2 sets of 10

Front hold

13kg duck walk handle x a couple of holds.

A pretty reasonable session considering I'd been ill.

Thanks, I was happy just to be there and not come last given how high the standard was. It only looks to be getting better too.

Thursday 6 August

Still not feeling wonderful after being ill at the weekend, not I'll anymore but my appetite hasn't come back so my weight is down a bit. However was at the osteopath yesterday to get some running repairs on a couple if wee niggles in my back so feeling better (if a little tender) after that.

17" deadlift

250kg x 2
275kg x 2 sets of 2
250kg x 5
210kg x 8

Speed 15" deadlift

170kg x 5 sets of 3

Parallel box squats x some, nothing even worth logging as I was flagging a bit by this stage.

An OK session I guess. Still struggling to get the bar moving on the 17" pulls and my lifts get faster the further up they are. Tried the 15" speed pulls to try and improve that initial pull. Nothing exciting today but steady enough.

Had a seminar with big Z today. It was really good and he is a very humble guy. He also gave some good tips about training and how he trains.

As part of the seminar did a few runs with the yoke, I think it was 170, 250 and 330kg for 20m or so. The heavy run was tough and had a few drops because the bar was slippy and I rushed it a bit, should have warmed up more than I did too. Still a pretty awesome experience to get tips from the strongest man who ever lived.

Dumbell

Right only
65kg x 2
70kg x 2
60kg x 2 sets of 5

Left only
60kg x 1
50kg x 2 sets of 5

Incline log

75kg x 3 sets of 10

Front hold

13kg duck walk x 2 holds

Sandbag

115kg x 3 sets of 60m, 10m out, 10 back and a drop/pickup every 20m.

The sandbag sucked but my conditioning is terrible so I need to get some cardio in. Nothing too exciting on the dumbell but reasonable volume.

Wednesday 12 August

17" deadlift

260kg x 3
275kg x 2
250kg x 5
210kg x 8

Didnt do much else as I was short on time. Felt quite heavy but not too bad I guess.

Friday 14 August

Seated Axle Strict press

70kg x 5
75kg x 2 sets of 5
60kg x 8
50kg x 15

Db laterals

25lb x 3 sets of 15

Front hold

13kg duck walk x 2 holds

Stones to 54"

75kg x a few
105kg x a few
120kg x a few
135kg x a few
170kg x fail, first time I (or anyone else) had attempted this particular stone so it was a wee bit smooth and dusty. Hopefully I will manage to get it loaded before too long.

Decent session today.
