One of those days where everything felt a bit laboured. Wanted more reps on my top sets of log but still got some work in. The bench was the only thing that felt pretty good today and upped the weight on it a bit. Not an amazing session but not a total write off by any means. One more session tomorrow then a few days off over Christmas.

Front squat

140kg x 2
150kg x 1
160kg x 1
172.5kg x 1, pb
140kg x 5

Stones over a 54" yoke

Various reps with the 100 and 116kg stones then a couple of singles with 130kg. Had real issues with the height of the yoke and it moving. Generally had a bit of a nightmare on stones today, don't know what was up with me.

Finished with a run of

116kg x 2 and 100kg x 5.

Mixed bag today, good squats, poor stones.

Nice front Squats Neil, shouldn't worry about the stones sometimes things just don't feel right.

Deadlift

180kg x 3
190kg x 6
200kg x 3

Suit on

235kg x 8 in about 50 seconds
260kg x 1, comfy enough, just for suits and giggles

1" deficit speed deadlift

170kg + 34kg of chain x 5 sets of 3

Kroc rows (no straps)

45kg x 2 sets of 20

Good session today. Happy with where my deadlifting is for the qualifier in a few weeks.

Cheers Ben, it was a good one. However my back doesn't agree as I am feeling pretty crippled today.

Tuesday 29 December

Log

85kg x 3 ftoh

102.5kg x 2 ftoh, went for a walk with my second rep when I locked it out and felt a twinge in my lower back so left at 2
95kg x 4 ftoh, in about 35 seconds.

Viking press

60kg x 10 strict
100kg x 3 sets of 8

Db bench

40kg x 6, lats were cramping.
30kg x 3 sets of 10

A couple of sets of rope pushdowns and db laterals.

Pretty decent session today, my lower back was super tight and meant I took a minute to get into things but it loosened off a bit as time went on. Pressing is still not amazing for me but it's moving in the right direction.

Wait until you try the logs at Arena strength we will be using for the qualifiers they are so much easier. I think our logs are probably the hardest logs to use.

Yeah Jim was saying last night that he'd used the ones at Arena and found them easier to press. Our ones are ifsa spec though and more similar to most of the logs you'll see. Apparently things are going to be pretty cramped for the comp up there.

Farmers

90kg x 2 runs of 20m
110kg x 2 runs of 20m
120kg x 2 runs of 20m
120kg x 18m walking the turn. Left hand slipped just shy of the line.

Stones to 50"

100kg x a few
116kg x a few
130kg x a single and a set of 2
116kg x 4

Last session of the year. Farmers were OK, still losing a bit of time on the pick up at the turn but better take a few seconds and have a clean run than drop part way down.

Stones were much better than last time I did them. Still nowhere near my best but a definite improvement. Got my dad to bring me over some Spartan stone sleeves from the states and they are good but I think I was a bit cautious tying them and should have cinched them in a bit tighter.

A pretty decent way to end the year. It's been a year of ups and downs for me performance wise. My best performance in a comp by far was at the start of the year in the open weight ssm qualifier. 105s was a disaster, naturals was OK in that I came second but not too happy with how I performed. Open ssm final was a tough day at the office but got my goal of not coming last. Finished with Lanarkshire's strongest man u105 and got 5th but was cost a better placing due to silly errors on events I should have done well at. I think my main problem this year was competing too often and stretching myself a bit thin, planning to just do 105s and naturals next year and leave the opens. Hopefully that will pay dividends.

A decent session to finish the year Neil.
Looks like you have a plan for next year, I have to agree competing too often does take its toll and I think you need to be selective about what you do.
