Wednesday 11 February

Some deadlifts

I think the most I did was a horrible suited 270kg pull. Also did some assistance stuff for deadlift, nothing to shout about.

Saturday 14 February

Events down at results.

Did a variety of pressing stuff including Axle up to 117kg and a triple at 107kg and some reps with a 70kg monster db. Reasonable but nothing too wonderful.

Did frame deadlift up to 315kg for a triple. Again reasonable enough but nothing too exciting, not too bad for being after a nightshift.

Strict Log

75kg x 3 sets of 3
85kg x 3 sets of 3
75kg x a set of 6 and a set of 5

Stones over a yoke, about 50"

Worked up to 135kg and had the 160kg stone lapped a couple of times but had a bit of a poor day on the stones today and need to put in some more work on them.

Mixed bag today, log was pretty decent and stones were poor. Need to start stepping things up a bit in the lead up to the ssm qualifier.

Log

Various up to a single at 105kg and some reps after.

16" deadlift

Worked up to 260kg x 5, probably could have had more but didn't warm up enough and felt my hamstring/glute tighten up so left it at 5. Still not too bad at that weight.

Ben and solbjorn were squatting tonight but I gave the squats a miss as my right knee is still not right after the frame squats I did weeks ago and not wanting to risk injury before my comp in a few weeks. Mostly I was just wrapping their knees but got a bit of work in as well.

Friday 20 February

A spot of early morning eventing today between shifts.

Farmers into sled drag (16m each way)

70kg farmers and 150kg sled x 1 run
110kg farmers and 150kg sled x 2 runs
130kg farmers and 150kg sled x 1 run
140kg farmers and 160kg sled x 1 run

Farmers were a bit slow today as I find our h-beam farmers really awkward but the sled was quicker than usual.

Keg carries

120kg x 3 lengths of 12m (put it down, turn and re-book up every 12m) 3 times through.

Quite a quick one today, pretty much just cardio but a pretty decent session.

Strict Log

75kg x 2 sets of 5
80kg x 2sets of 4
85kg x 2 sets of 3
87.5kg x 2
90kg x 1

Log pushpress

95kg x 3 sets of 3

Incline log

95kg x 3 sets of 3

Did some band pushdowns and db laterals but had to rush through them as I had an osteopath appointment I needed to get to. Had a bit of cardio in the form of a quick run round a field with the dog afterwards too.

A pretty decent session but my pushpress seems to have gone off the boil a bit while my strict press is improving. Can't grumble too much though as my Strict pressing is about as good as it has ever been.

Did a bit of deadlifting on Wednesday up to 240kg x 2 and some assistance stuff.

Today did some dumbell up to some singles at 75kg and some light farmers for a bit of fitness. Wasn't really feeling it this week but got some work in. Lower back is still not quite right but I have the osteopath again on Thursday and that should hopefully sort me out.

The dumbell looked good in the video Neil, seemed relatively easy. We'll have to arrange a day to test out some of the events for the Natural comp with yourself and Ben after Ssm.

Cheers dave. I will sort out a time to come up for a session once the qualifier is done with.

Monday 2 March

Did some pressing today with a pretty horrendous two day hangover. Felt like I might die for most of the session but managed to get some work in.

Strict Log

75kg x 2 sets of 5
80kg x 2 sets of 3
85kg x 2 sets of 2

Log pushpress

90kg x 2 sets of 3
95kg x 2 sets of 3
100kg x 2 singles

Did some band pushdowns and db laterals but nothing too exciting. A fairly decent session all things considered, hopefully I will be back to normal by Wednesday and manage to get a decent session in.

Good session today, wasn't expecting much as I'm on nightshift this week but got my first half decent deadlift session in a while. Had intended to do some suited pulls today but forgot my suit. I will get one more session in the suit next week and then it'll be time for the comp.

Friday 13 March

Last heavy session before the qualifier.

Deadlift

240kg x 1

Suit on

260kg x 1
280kg x 1
260kg x 2 sets of 3

Speed deadlifts

160kg x 6 sets of 2

Bent over rows

140kg x 3 sets of 10

Chins

Bodyweight x some

Good final session, didn't go too crazy but a couple of decent lifts as confidence builders for next week. Not going down to the qualifier expecting to do especially well as I think that the standard will be very high and my form isn't the best at the moment. However it should be a good fun day out and good prep for the 105 comps later in the year.

Had the Scotland's strongest man qualifier down in Dumfries yesterday and it was my first comp at a decent level in some time. My preparation had been OK and I was thinking I was somewhere back close to my best statically but my cardio wasn't great. Wasn't expecting much from the day and just wanted to use it as a bit of prep for some 105 comps later in the year.

First event was a pressing medley of 100kg block press, 75kg dumbell, 135kg Axle and 150kg log all done in that order. I despise block press and have never been good at it but knew that if I got past the block I would get the dumbell easily and had a chance at the Axle. However I just couldn't get the block, had issues getting it racked at my shoulders and when I eventually did I had wasted a lot of energy getting it there and left it resting on my Adams apple so had no power to press it. 0 points and a share of last place for this one.

Next up was a frame squat with a cage setup behind you like at wsm, Stuart said it was about 270-280kg but I thought it felt heavier. Unracked it and got 3 reps, the first 2 weren't too bad but the third one felt hard, got pinned on my 4th. I think I got my foot positioning slightly wrong but 3 reps was OK, ended up being good for about 8th or so as a heap of guys no ripped or only got 1.

We then had 138kg farmers for 15m into a chain drag of 300kg can plus an anchor with a 20kg plate added for 15m. I went quite late on due to my good squat and had seen most guys struggle on the chain. Did the farmers fine although a few of us thought they felt heavier than 138. Then came the chain, on my first couple of tries I couldn't budge it at all but tried interlocking my fingers as Stuart Murray suggested it, got it moving about 5 or 6m but totally crushed the fingers on my left hand in the process. There were a lot of guys got around the same distance as me but I think I edged past most of them by a few inches and was somewhere around mid table on this one. Fairly happy with that as I expected to do poorly on that one as I am generally pretty poor at drags.

We had a frame deadlift next on the same set up as for the squats next, it was also meant to be around 270-280kg in the hands. Got 3 reps for this as well, took a breather after the third which on reflection was a mistake, might have got another rep if I'd just cracked on but was near my limit anyway and found it a heavy pull. My 3reps were good for somewhere around 10th place so happy with that.

The penultimate event was a loading medley of 2 kegs and 2 sacks all at about 120kg. We were told before hand that a couple of the implements were a bit lighter but weren't told which ones so some tactics came into play. Before this one I planned to just go slow and steady as I know my fitness needs a bit of work. Popped up both kegs and the first sack easily enough in a reasonable but not world beating time. Then I went back for the last sack which I'd been told was the lighter one, however it was filled with some sort of shale and was heavy despite being only half full. Got up and moving with it but the contents started shifting in it and I struggled to hold on to it and ended up being timed out about 2m from the platform. This put me somewhere in the mid table region again.

Last up was stones of 120, 140, 150, 160, 180 and 210kg with all but the big one loaded to about 52". Sarthe scoresheets before the stones and I was out of the qualifying places but the gap was easily bridgeable with a good stone run. Popped up the first two quickly, had a couple of balance issues on the 150 but it was fairly straightforward as well. Re tackied for the 160 and popped it up around the minute mark. I was well happy with that having never got a 160 stone at the end of a run before. Didn't have time for a real go at the 180 so left it there. This got me about 15th place or so I think. Saw a few guys ahead of me make a has of the stones so thought I was in with a shout of sneaking into the final. Had a nervous wait to find out I had finished 16th out of 28 and missed out on a qualifying place by 2 points.

I have decidedly mixed feelings about my day. I went down there with no expectations of doing well so it is kind of a bonus to finish where I did but it is still a bit annoying to come so close and miss out in a qualifying spot. I will still probably end up going to the final as someone will almost certainly pull out before hand and I am the reserve but would have been nice to qualify.

In terms of my performance I am pretty happy as I did well on the things I thought I would do well at and in general did better on what I though would be my bad events. The only exception being the block press but I can't really complain as I didn't train it, Ben is going to make one up for the farm so won't have any excuse next time I have to do that event. I think it is the most consistent performance I have had in any comp and I bettered my placing by one on the last time I did the qualifier in what was undoubtedly a stronger field of guys so hopefully this will set me up for a good season.

Finally just have to thank Stuart Murray and all his crew for putting on another great comp that ran very smoothly in spite of having nearly 30 boys in it. He always puts on the best comps and is the driving force behind Strongman in Scotland.

Nice write up and sounds like a good performance especially given your expectations.
Really close on qualifying too, well done.

Cheers dave.

Back in the gym today after a few days off. Nothing too crazy and limited it to pressing as I didn't press anything other than warm ups on Saturday.

Log

90kg x 6 sets of 2

Did a couple of runs with the empty farmers (70kg) and left it there.

A decent enough session to get things moving again as I have felt like I had been run over by a bus for the past couple of days. Feel better for having got some work in.
