Dumbell

50kg x 2 sets of 5 with both arms
60kg x 7 in just over 50 seconds, steady enough pace, could have gone a bit faster and plenty of room for improvement by comp day in 6 weeks.

Incline CGBP

70kg x 4 sets of 5 and a set of 10

Band pushdowns

Heavy Band x 3 sets of 10

Front hold

2 x 9kg dumbells for one hold.

Had a very busy long weekend at work and was absolutely shattered so decided to take it relatively easy and just get some reps in today. Still a fairly reasonable session.

18" deadlift

250kg x 3
270kg x a set of 3 and a set of 4
250kg x 5, wanted 6 but I think the sets at 270 took a lot out of me.
210kg x 10

I was short on time again today as I had other stuff on so that was all. However I am pretty happy with my pulls today. I think my form was better and I was trying to rip the bar up too quick before. Hopefully should manage a decent pull at Lanarkshire's next month as I find the skip set up easier for 18" pulls.

Really solid training lately. Should do well at Lanarkshire.
Used the dumbbell for the competition. Really nice to use, well balanced and a nice size

Cheers Damien, training has been good recently. I am hoping Lanarkshire's goes OK, a bit gutted that they have taken out the car walk but thems the breaks.

Events down at results with junior.

Conans wheel

Various warmups

220kg on the pins x 1 revolution (got my breathing all wrong on this one) and 2 sets of 2 revolutions, I was wheezing like an old man with emphysema by the end. Not a fan of conans but this was OK, didn't help that we couldn't find a big enough flat section so parts of the course were up and down slopes.

Dumbell

Worked up to 60kg x 7 in 60 seconds. Went off a bit quick I think and should manage to squeeze in a couple more reps with better pacing and a bit of work on fitness.

That was all I had time for as it took ages to get the conans set up. All in all fairly happy with my session.

Log viper press

Up to 85kg x 2, form was horrible, more like a monged up Strict press really
75kg x 5 sets of 3, got my form down on set 3. Hadn't been turning the log far enough away from me on my lap before. Pretty straightforward once I sorted my form.

Incline CGBP

70kg x 5
80kg x 2 sets of 5

Front hold

13kg duck walk x 1 hold
9kg db per hand x 2 holds

Was nightshift last night away up in Fraserburgh so had an 80 mile drive home after work. As a result I was absolutely shattered and in spite of eating before going to bed in the morning hadn't got enough food in. Because of that I thought I would just do some technique work on the log, started out with pretty horrendous form but got there in the end. Planning to do more viper press over the off season, hopefully it'll help with cardio and pressing. Relatively happy with that session considering the lack of sleep.

Another hard one today, my lack of sleep continued all week including being held on yesterday till midday. Wasn't expecting much from tonight's session but pleasantly surprised. The double at 280kg didn't feel too bad, had intended to do a bit more volume on the lighter sets but ran out of gas pretty quick and didn't want to push it when my form was going. Hopefully I will get some sleep tonight and get a decent events session tomorrow morning.

Worked in with Ben doing a press medley. Did a purple of reps on the 65kg dumbell and a couple if reps with the 112kg Axle. Also failed the clean on the Axle a few times, first time I have failed to clean an Axle in a long time, dunno what was up with me but just about broke my sternum in the process. All in all a pretty poor attempt at pressing today.

Loading medley

All with a 12m run in over a yoke at about 52".

120kg keg, 115kg sandbag and 125kg sandbag x 3 runs

None were rapid but steady enough. It helped training with Ben who is rapid on loading so that pushed me in a bit. By the end of it I felt like s**t but good cardio and the type of work I need to be getting in.

Mixed bag today, pretty poor pressing but good loading.

Dumbell Right only

52.5kg x 9 in 60 seconds, misloaded and thought it was 60kg. Still a good pace though and relatively happy.

Log viper press

13kg duck walk x 1 hold

Did some bench as I am planning to do a local powerlifting comp in December and want to not totally embarrass myself on bench. Tried to do the commands in my head too. A reasonable if slightly boring session.

17" deadlift up to 270kg x 1 and pulled something in my back/hip on the second rep. s**te.

Friday 4 September

Back has loosened off a bit but still not feeling amazing.

Dumbell (right only)

55kg x 10 in about 70 seconds. First 8 were rapid then gassed out a bit and was slow on the last 2. My lungs go before my arm does on this one so a wee bit more fitness work needed before the comp in 3 weeks.

Log viper press

75kg x 3 sets of 4
82.5kg x 3 sets of 2

Paused bench

Worked up to 4 singles at 105kg.

Front hold

13kg duck walk x 1 hold

Another fairly boring but decent session.

57.5kg x 8 in 60 seconds. Wasn't going flat out and think I can squeeze in a couple more reps in the time.

Axle ftoh

80kg x a set if 8 and a set of 6, first set was all powercleans and couldn't get the last 2 on the second set due to a ridiculous forearm pump.

Paused bench

70kg x 5
90kg x 3
100kg x 2
70kg x 5 Paused and 5 tng

Working in with Ben again, quite a tough session with a lot of volume but a good one. Found out today that my weight is down a bit and I am sitting around 99-100kg but don't think I have lost any strength, just a wee bit more trim.

Pretty solid session today. Feeling fairly beat up at the moment at the end of a long season but just another couple of weeks of graft and I will get a rest before starting off my offseason training.

Saturday 12 September

Was nightshift last night and headed straight to the gym at half 9 before going to bed. Was down at results with a a fair group of lads from all over the shire.

Conans wheel

160kg x 3 revolutions
200kg x 2 and a half revolutions
240kg x just over 2 revolutions. Once again we couldn't find a flat bit of ground so was half uphill and half downhill, made it tough.

Arm over arm (all weights are in addition to the prowler)

190kg x 15m in 23 seconds
230kg x 15m in a minute 10, only 40kg more but felt like double the weight.
150kg x 15m in 26 seconds, running on empty by this stage.

Duck walk

200kg x a few short runs, as above just wrecked. It's also a horrible bit of kit that is one of the most unpleasant Strongman implements I have ever used.

Did a bit of light loading but just fannied about.

It turns out that training straight after nightshift is not a good plan. Conans was decent and arm over arm started off OK. Not a bad session given my lack of sleep. Very glad that I only have one more week of training to do as my body has had enough for this season.

75kg x twice through.

Front hold

Tough going today having just finished a weekend of nightshifts at 7 this morning. Also got a sore right hip from the downhill conans on Saturday. However I was still fairly happy with the session, last heavyish pressing session before Lanarkshire's next Sunday and hoping the dumbell will be OK for me.

18" deadlift

Worked up to a double at 290kg. Took the reps fairly slow and steady as my hip/lower back is still tight from jarring it on conans at the weekend but they were comfortable enough reps. That was my last heavy deadlift session before and quite happy with where my pulls are at as long as my hip holds up. One more session of events on Friday, rugby on Monday then rest up for the comp. Roll on Lanarkshire's.

Cardio today, had 70 minutes of rugby against the Australian police. A proper brutal physical game played at a very high pace but I survived and had a reasonable performance at hooker despite not having played rugby in 10 months.

Came away 31-27 winners so chuffed with that and happy to stay injury free ahead of Lanarkshire's.
