Had my last comp of the season in Lanarkshire's strongest man u105 yesterday. My prep was OK for this one but it's the end of what had been a long season so had a few niggles, don't think anything hindered me too badly though and felt fairly good going in.

Got there nice and early after the long drive down, no one was able to get weighed in as the power was out due to Scottish power doing work on the estate but happy that everyone would have made weight comfortably anyway. Got our rules briefing from Stuart and warmed up for the first event.

First up was silver dollar deadlift for max with the mini skip set up that I quite like. Got the first few lifts in easily up to 310kg but couldn't budge 330kg. This was still good for equal second place so happy with the result.

Next we had truck pull with harness and rope. The truck was an awesome looking army people carrier, it was only 6 and a half tonnes but had a grand total of 10 wheels so was really tough. Got a really good start but had a couple if stumbles down the course and my time suffered. Think I ended up second last on this one, I was quite disappointed as I had hoped this would be a good event for me.

We then had a front hold with two ammo tins loaded with concrete at 11kg each. I was out early and got about 25 seconds which was the same as a lot if guys, this put me somewhere in the bottom half of the table again.

Last up before the break was a loading medley of 2 x 100kg kegs a 90kg sandbag and a 105kg anvil. It was a short run in onto a small, rickety platform. Finished easily in 22 seconds and this put me somewhere in the middle of the pack.

We then had a break where there was a local bike gang came in to show off their bikes and fill the whole warehouse with exhaust fumes.

First up after the break was conans wheel set about 235-240kg. I was worried about this one before hand as it was a really high pick up and I thought I might have issues being short. However I managed to get it lifted and got a bit over two revolutions. This was good for second place and well past everyone's marks except Dhanni who won.

Next was duck walk for max distance. It was only about 140kg but was a huge gas bottle with a handle attached and the most awkward implement I have ever used. Every step I took with it my fat little legs pushed it further down out of my hands. As a result I didn't get very far with it and was down near the bottom of the pack again.

The penultimate event was dumbell for reps at 60kg. This was the biggest dumbell I have ever seen and I found it really awkward to get set on my shoulder. Ended up only getting 5 reps which got me decent points but I was quite disappointed with as I had hoped for more as dumbell is just about my best event.

Last up was Stone over the bar for reps at 135 or 140kg. This would usually be an easy weight but after 7 other events I didn't have a whole lot left in the tank. Got 5 reps and am reliably informed by Stuart Murray that I only just got the last one over in the time. However that was good for equal third place.

Finished fifth overall, a slightly frustrating performance as it was very up and down however fifth ain't too bad all things considered. It was a quick, well run and enjoyable comp and Martin put in another good one as he has done all year. Now I will get a bit of rest before starting my offseason training to hopefully have a good run at things next year.

Monday 5 October

Log

80kg x 3 sets of 5

Incline bench

70kg x 3 sets of 5

Band pushdowns

Heavy band x 3 sets of 10

Supersetted with

DB laterals

20lb x 3 sets of 15

First session back after a week off and the start of my off-season. Things felt a bit heavier than they should have done but I have dropped my calories a bit to try and get slightly leaner so that is to be expected. A fairly easy one to ease back into things.

80kg x 2 sets of 8, these sucked ass

Good session with Ben up at the farm, I did think I might die on the Axle press but feel better for it.

Wednesday 14 October

15"deadlift

235kg x 2
255kg x 2, both done belt less as I forgot to out a belt on.

Deadlift from the floor

200kg x 6 sets of 3

Pendlay rows

120kg x 2 sets of 8

Chins

Bodyweight x some

Pretty decent session today, stuff is still feeling a bit heavier than it should but hoping to build up slowly and still be on track to lose a few kgs off the belly.

Front squat

120kg x 3
130kg x 6 sets of 3

Farmers

120kg x 2 runs of about 17 or 18m and a run of just over 30m with a drop and turn at halfway, went down on the way back when I tripped over my own feet but grip felt OK.
70kg x 80m with no drops

Not a bad session.

Monday 19 October

Log (all pushpress)

95kg x 6sets of 3

Incline bench

70kg x 5
80kg x 2 sets of 5

Axle ftoh

80kg x a set of 8 and a set of 3, tweaked something in my right shoulder near the end of the first set and played it safe with the second.

That was all for tonight as I had planned to get home early for my tea. As it happened I ended up chatting with my father in law for a few minutes after anyway so wasn't any earlier home.

Quite a decent session today, felt a bit flat as I just finished a weekend of nightshifts and was still sore from Saturdays session. However Ben pushed me on/bullied me into doing more/heavier and ended up getting some good work in.

Wednesday 21 October

15"deadlift

235kg x 2
255kg x 2, felt very comfortable today.

Deadlift from the floor

205kg x 2 sets of 3, felt really f**king heavy. Dunno what was up but had no speed off the floor, dropped the weight rather than grind out reps this early in the offseason.
190kg x 4 sets of 3, still not easy by any means but a bit better.

Pendlay rows

120kg x 3 sets of 8

Band assisted wide grip Chins

Light band x 3 sets of 8. My lats and biceps were on fire by the end of these.

Finished with a timed hold of pinch grip with our thick 25kg bumpers.

A decidedly disappointing session today. My main lift of pulls from the floor were really bad, everything else was OK I guess. Just a bit of a bad day at the office but got my work in.

Friday 23 October

Front squat

132.5kg x 6 sets of 3, pretty straightforward and probably good for plenty more but will stick with a slower build up in weights.

80kg x 36m
90kg x 36m
100kg x 36m
110kg x 36m
70kg x 80m, no drops and walked the turn on all of the sets.

Nothing exciting today but a pretty decent session.

Tuesday 27 october

15" deadlift

240kg x 2
260kg x 2, still feeling pretty easy but planning to just keep going with a 5kg a week increase to avoid plateauing.

Deadlift from the floor

200kg x 6 sets of 3, much better this week. Last week's pulls were pretty woeful but these felt a lot better.

Pendlay rows

125kg x 8

Band assisted pull ups

Medium band x 12

Had to cut my assistance stuff a bit short today as I ran out of time. However it was a pretty good session.

Saturday 31 October

Front squat

140kg x 6 sets of 3

Farmers

70kg x 50m,drop and turn at 30m
120kg x 3 runs of 18m with a hold at the end
70kg x 80m walking the turns and no drops

Good session today. Front squats felt a bit too straightforward last week so upped the weight by more than I had originally planned. Today they didn't feel anywhere near maximal but had to work for them a bit. Farmers weren't anything special but decent enough.

Last week's training was a total write off. Was sick on Sunday and Monday and took a few days to recover from not eating. Did some light pressing on Wednesday and some stones on Saturday but nothing worth shouting about.

Monday 9 november

15"deadlift

245kg x 2
265kg x 2, this is the first week I felt like I actually needed to work at these.

Deadlift from the floor

205kg x 6 sets of 3

Pendlay rows

125kg x 8

Band assisted pull ups

Medium band x 12

Short on time so had to miss out some assistance stuff. Decent session today.

Wednesday 11 November

Log

97.5kg x 6 sets of 3

Seated axle military press

60kg x 3 sets of 6

Log ftoh

75kg x 8

3 way raises (front, lateral then rear)

20lb x 2 sets of 30, 10 each way.

Band pushdowns

Heavy Band x 2 sets of 12

All a bit rushed again today as I had to get to work. A few reps on the heavy sets with the log were a bit scrappy but not a bad session.

Saturday 14 November

Front squat

142.5kg x 6 sets of 3

Safety bar box squats

105kg x 2 sets of 5, dunno if I was doing these wrong or it was just my lack of a neck but these sucked and I felt like my chin was on my chest the whole time. Tweaked something in my upper back/lower trap so didn't go any heavier.

Farmers

115kg x 5 runs of 20m with a drop and turn at 10m, tried to work on foot speed and my transition at the turn as I think I waste a bit of time there.
125kg x 10m

I went down to results' new place today and I like the new set up. Just got word that there is a ssm u105 qualifier in January so I'm going to have to change my plans a bit to suit that. The events are pretty basic with log for reps, deadlift for reps, farmers for 20m and stone for reps.

Today's session was good, squats felt decent but having to work for them now. Fairly happy with the farmers too, kept the weights a bit lower and tried to work on speeding up my pick ups at the turn. They were OK but still plenty of room for improvement on the turn, very happy with my foot speed though.
