Every course was top notch, but it was probably the duck and waffle. Perfect dish, it would take me a long long time to tire of it. Definitely on my London list.

Ridiculously good eating day yesterday, with two of my favourite food people. First, lunch at Umezushi, hidden away in the railway arches next to Victoria. Beautiful sushi and sashimi, just immaculate, and much less expensive than I feared.

Then, after an afternoon of looking at cars and drinking gin and craft beer, dinner at The French, with wine pairings.

The ox in coal oil remains one of the best things I have ever eaten. Superb meal, worth every penny. This is why I don't take holidays: so I can do this stuff more.

Unsurprisingly, my weight loss for the last week is well into negative figures...

If you're ever in London during holidays and fancy a lunch date, let me know. Seriously.

I definitely will, and likewise Manchester!

Back to reality today. Smoked sausage and feta salad for brunch; for dinner, salad vinaigrette with a little stilton, and simply roasted chicken wings. Sriracha mayo on the side.

Quick, cheap, easy, tasty, very sticky and messy Happy.

Supper club at Claire's of Smithfield last night.

[IMG]http://i1376.photobucket.com/albums/ah29/rfbooth/PhotoGrid_146...

The soup, the pork, and the desserts were excellent; the crab was good; and the mackerel with gooseberry was classical and tasty but a bit over-cooked at the ends. Excellent, all in all, though.

Back to reality. Added some Worcestershire sauce to the mushrooms tonight, which was good.

Many many tapas. Highlight was probably a lomo and avocado 'bruschetta'. All washed down with a fair few gruzcampo.

Long overdue second visit to the Lord Clyde near Macclesfield yesterday. The ten-course tasting menu is advance order only, and of course we did.

We got a fig Bakewell instead of their lemon spice because something went wrong, but it was a superb meal, perfect execution and service, amazing food, top-class wine. About as good as anywhere around here, I think.

Tonight I went to GBK with a very different friend group and had a lovely pink burger, not something you can get as many places as you could a year ago, sadly. Obviously a very different dinner to last night's..

Had two great dinners in the last 3 days. Tuesday was a nice simple sirloin in a blue cheese sauce and chips, washed down with a lovely Rioja. Yesterday we found a quite remarkable little bistro run by a Spanish/German couple.

We started with a tomato, onion, goats cheese and oregano salad and then I had pork loin with calvados caramelised apples and rosemary and butter sautéed potatoes served with a pork jus. Finished with a warm
Chocolate brownie and ice cream and washed down with a local white. Really really good. Would have set us back a good £100-150 in London and we paid 70 euros. Best dinner I've had in a long time.

That sounds great, Cuddles. My kind of food.

Tonight, because I'm worth it, sirloin, swede, mushrooms, shallots, garlic, lemon, butter Happy.

[IMG]http://i1376.photobucket.com/albums/ah29/rfbooth/PhotoGrid_147...

The steak was a 28-day aged one, and I cooked it one minute each side as hot as a Tefal pan will go, then another minute each side on low, and a final minute held on the fat. Then I rested it for the best part of a quarter hour. Nicely medium-rare, and not a drip when cut. (The juices on the plate are all from the garlic mushrooms in butter and lemon...)

Another great dinner - started with a salad of tomatoes, avocado, various Spanish cheeses, olives - significantly greater than the sum of its parts. Then a confit duck risotto with zucchini and wild mushrooms. Finished with an apple strudel with candied pumpkin and vanilla ice cream. Washed down with a bottle of (bloody lovely) local red.

Left it very late to start on supper, and almost crumbled and called for takeout. Frittata to the rescue, ten minutes from gas on to table.

[IMG]http://i1376.photobucket.com/albums/ah29/rfbooth/IMG_20160807_...

Bacon, mushrooms, shallots, spring onions, eggs (obviously), cheddar, and a simple salad vinaigrette. Sriracha to serve. So good.

Another great dinner. Started with a grilled cheese with coriander sauce. Beef fillet with chilli jam, sautéed pots and an oxtail jus. Finished with orange and raspberry sorbets. Washed down with a cracking local red. She had similar, all for 70 euros.

Hawksmoor, for a friend's birthday. It's cheap corkage day on Mondays, so we brought wine. He brought a three litre bottle of Spanish red, making the most of the £5/bottle... We averaged a litre and a half of wine each, not bad at lunch.

[IMG]http://i1376.photobucket.com/albums/ah29/rfbooth/PhotoGrid_147...

Steak tartare (superb), then I split the burger (with short rib and Stilton) and the sirloin with a friend. Sides of dripping fries, bone marrow, and garlic spinach. And Bernaise.

Happy, full, drunk.
