there was a bike in the bike shed at work , sat there , doing nothing - eventually i moved the bike out of the shed and down the side , next to a fence (it was taking up rack space)

the bike shed is semi out of the way of pedestrians etc.

no-one has moved / used this bike since ATLEAST when i broke my wrist last september

now, its started to go manky -chain rusty , tyres flat

I wanted to just take this bike home do it up, use it as my own.

my pal at work said i would be robbing it and could get in trouble/sacked.

what shall i do ?

I would have taken it weeks ago.

Take it.
If somebody ever requests it back they will have a well maintained bike returned by the legend of Boarski.

I'd have took it.

If it's been that long either the person has forgotten about it, or they don't work there now.

Either way I'd say it's fair game. If it is brought up just return it and everyone should be happy.

I thought the very same - i would be more than happy to give it to someone who suddenly decides to reclaim it.

I think the person has left or was potted.

the only thing that stopped me was my pal said , imagine being in a disciplinary and how it would look written on paper as my bosses made the case against me.....

i also think not one single person will ever miss this bike and its about to go to s**t.

The first problem is that someone else at work knows about it, or at least knows you’re thinking about ‘borrowing’ said bike.

Secondly, is there CCTV in the area, and would you be seen removing the bike from the site when you’re intending to ‘borrow’ it.

Thirdly, does anyone know the bike is in terrible condition? Because if not, you could say you borrowed it to cycle home one day (If you don’t drive to work that is).

There is always a risk, but you need a solid backstory should you get get questioned down the line if your pal says something.

My mate is 100% solid as a rock

there is no CCTV pointing at the shed but there would be of me leaving HOWEVER , this would have rely on someone bothering to actually look and thats if someone decided they wanted the bike and approached the managment

the bike is rideable , but looking like its been left outside for 12 months !

I probably wont be doing anything at the moment, but its such a shame that people dont give a s**t about stuff

Take it and leave a note for the owner. Say you're restoring it before it gets beyond repair.

I was thinking of printing out some photos with a 'is/was this yours' and stapling it to the fance where it has been stood for months

because of the nature of what is inside , there does appear to be quite a decent turnover of staff , cant keep their hands out of the till so to speak

not really wanting to DISS anyone at work, but i cant imagine any manager being bothered to give it their time/thought and they would probably just say 'its not yours, please leave the office now'.

It's a pandemic, every man for himself

If selfish bas***ds can buy 100 years worth of toilet roll and sanatiser, then stealing a bike is nothing!
