IainT | Push press + knee pain | 04-05-2012 @ 12:47
normal people, like me. Member 2325, 550 posts | Never really done push press, and it's probably lower than my strict press. But, as soon as I introduce the merest hint of a push I start getting trouble with my knees in the days afterwards. Jumpers knee I think, discomfort in the patellar tendon. Only really want to do them for complexes and for a bit of overload on the OHP (if I can get them above my strict!). Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?

My asshole is not watertight. Member 2926, 6050 posts SQ 217.5, BP 107.5, DL 225550.0 kgs @ 86kgs UnEq | Could you be keeping your stance too narrow so that your knees travel excessively over your toes??? Maybe try a wider stance so that it's easier to dip between your hips (if that makes sense). I suppose you could also be dipping too far which would also increase the angle of the knee. Is your dip a short sharp one, or a long slow one almost from a quarter squat position? (I'd say the former would be better for you).

Member 1728, 287 posts SQ 220, BP 165, DL 265650.0 kgs @ 108kgs UnEq | You can do a search on tinternet for how to strap your leg when you have pattelar tendonitus. It involves lifting the knee cap. This stops the tendon being put under as much tension. Also check your quad, hip flexor flexibility/mobility. If they are tight and shortened, this will put extra tension on the pattelar tendon. Check calf flexability as the top end of the calf joins the junction that joins the pattelar tendon. Again if your calf is tight this could add tension to your pattelar tendon. If the pain is more toward the outside of knees then foam roll/stretch your IT band

normal people, like me. Member 2325, 550 posts | Thanks for the input. slim- yeah, I think the stance is narrower than my squat stance. I've tried to avoid just dropping the knees forward and there being no hip involvement, but when I've tried to use the hips I feel like I'm just going to slam the bar into my jaw. mils - the weight is never anything I can't control on the negative, and that's partly what I'm aiming for as it's merely an assistance exercise for me. Nick - been working hard on hip mobility lately as it was stopping me squatting. Will work on my calves too, everyone in my family has tight calves.

Trump will get another four years Member 126, 16707 posts SQ 160, BP 110, DL 225495.0 kgs @ 75kgs UnEq | I would guess thightness in your hams and hips to be the cause. in my experience, if you increase flexibility in those areas the tension in your knee will decrease.

Avatar not found I might destroy the planet Member 2745, 803 posts | Resting probably won't cure it, I've had it for a few years and rested months at a time. I had a scan and i think it was blood vessels or some sort of vessel that built up on the tendon. Had it injected with a few things and made it about 50% better. More injections could cure it fully. You can also cure it by doing slow eccentric squats with heel on a plate, maybe 2" high, and roll out/massage quads a lot to keep the tendon from being stressed more.
