The MH article is in relation to 'normal' people.

Which makes the comment regarding BMI being as accurate as a chocolate thermometer even more dodgy since for the average person the BMI scale does work quite well.

It might well be but who wrote it, who edited it, and who published it are the main questions to ask yourself. what are their motives?

Men's Health and any other magazine are published in order to sell advertising space and as such will publish things that fit with the overall message they want to convey to sell. It doesn't mean anything in there is or is not of any particular value, some of it will be, some of it won't.

BMI has a value. Waist size has a value. if you want to assess someone's health risk level they can contribute to an overall picture but are not the whole picture in themselves. If all other health INDICATORS are good and BMI or waist size is high then it becomes an anomolous result and can be pretty much ignored. I imagine the CORRELATION between BMI being high and blood pressure, resting heart rate etc. etc. also being high is pretty good and as such that is the value of the simple assessment. As ever there will be exceptions.

For the record I'm overweight on BMI. I am not worried about this. I am pretty sure I'd be healthier if I was 'normal' on BMI and everything else was the same but I imagine it'd be marginal. If I drank less, I drink a fair bit, I'd probably lose some unnecessary weight and be a LOT healthier. would it be the weight loss that made me healthier? Not really, but it would correlate with me being healthier and lighter so from a simple perspective it is worth people considering as it can cause healthier habits and is something people like to focus on anyway as it correlates with improved perception of appearance for most people.

As you can see, it doesn't suit me to say it has value, I'd be better personally pretending it's rubbish, I'm perfect and it's wrong, but that's not the case, it has SOME value, even if it isn't the final word in health assessment.

Not as a way of assessing levels of brown fat, nor predicting risk of chronic disease, neither of which are necessarily linked to your body mass.

Does this mean I will die soon?

Hear hear!
I was like 95kg with a 40 inch waist. Then I went to 92kg with a 40 inch waist, now I'm 87 atm with a 37 waist. I'm gonna die too!

You know, I almost wrote something similar but couldn't be bothered after 4 cans of Stella. You're right, BMI is only good for predicting levels of total bodyfat and I'd expect even within the general population (ie. not those partaking ANY sports) there are still probably plenty of people falling outside the norm ranges (probably 50%)

In and of itself it doesn't really provide much info on a persons risk of cardiovascular disease, or their general health. I wonder how far it is possible to take your BMI before there are undisputed effects on health, whether that's an abnormal resting heart rate, decreased insulin sensitivity, increased cholesterol etc etc.

BMI of something near 40 I think. So yes, I am obese.
I'm generally fit though (regularly dodge harpoons at the local pool for ~100 lengths) , so I blame my fat ass for the additional weight I carry!

According to this month's Men's Health, if your waist size is 37" or more, you are at increased risk of heart disease.

I really dont know why they spend money researching this s**t!

If your a 39 and happy with your physique, yet are told the above, would you do anything about it. In 90% of cases, I'd say, f**k no.....

If you're a 39" and UNHAPPY about it most people would only whinge and still not do anything about it!

Iirc the group with the best expected health outcomes, correlated with Bmi, are the 25-30 group. The "healthy weight" bmi group are quite a long way down the list in terms of actual healthiness by class.

The whole bmi thing is utter junk science. (imnsho.)

I would certainly believe this to be true, at times of higher stress the noticible effect on my health is huge

I worked with a guy who always said " if you worry you die and if you don't worry you die so what's the point of worrying".

He took it to the opposite extreme though and didn't give a f**k about anything.
