Watching Luke's deadlift and with Tom Martin in mind is a pony tail more or less important to strength than actual training?
» stone throwing (Go to post)21-03-2014 @ 21:27
Sorry to destroy the thread with boringness.

If the weight is light and you are strong it doesn't require you to fire much muscle to propel it so you need to be very good at recruitment to throw a good distance.

If you are weak and need to recruit more fibre to propel it that can be beneficial.

Probably should. Glute and abdominal activation whilst releasing hip flexors, as already said, very good for addressing/combating/managing anterior hip tilt and associated problems.

I'd like to do hair sample testing at BNSM but we haven't got a never ending pot of money unfortunately.

I actually just think it would be interesting, I'm not claiming I now believe that measurement would absolutely determine people using or not using. As someone pointed out a ripped juicer at FFMI 24.9 is still within this measure but outside the spirit of the comp.

I think it would be interesting as without mentioning any names I can think of a few previous 'clean' competitors I think may struggle on this measure...

Cuddles said:If you are 20% at 128 as per your stats, that would make you 113.7 at 10%. Ie an absolute freak.

There are very very few people walking around at 18 stone and 10% bodyfat. Let alone people who have done it drug free.

And here lies the the whole point of the FFMI aspect of the article. We all know there's pretty much a natural limit to the size you can achieve PED free, these guys have just done their research and put a figure on it.

whats FFMI?

Read the article. Fat Free Mass Index. Allegedly over 25 is tantamount to not being entirely natural based on evidence of the biggest guys managed to get pre- PED existence.

I would like to see the FFMI taken at Britain's Natural Strongest Man, would be interesting!

Do you mean rotation or tilt? Yep, just being a cnut for the sake of it. ; )

Training looks great, really impressive after the injury. Just gone back to some oly work myself and am loving it. Apologies if you have already said and I've missed it but what goals are you working on at the minute?
» day before Weigh ins (Go to post)16-01-2014 @ 21:03
Hope I don't get bullied now for being on-topic but biggest problem weigh-ins have caused me this year is being disciplined for a period in advance, hitting the desired weight, then enjoying being able to blow it pre-comp so much it's made the comp hard as I've felt weirdly different come comp time than when I trained for it!

This runs in line with my theory. Are brian and z that fit? No just theyre that strong theyre not working very hard with the weights used.

This is Rippetoe's whole angle, get stronger and then you're better at everything because everything's lighter and then easier!

PaulSavage said:I'm not understanding what your saying, your saying fat lifts the weight? Doesn't make any sense, of course when you gain muscle you gain strength, it doesn't just work off your motor skills or tendon and ligament strength. This would be why the bigger guys are stronger than the little guys and all the wsm competitors are f**king massive.

You are correct. You do not understand. I am now disappointed in myself for getting into this.

1. Bigger muscles are not always just bigger in totally equal ways. Sacroplasmic and sacromere hypertrophy (this is off the top of my head so bear with me if I'm not 100% on it here) are not equal. The upshot of this is that training optimally for getting bigger is not the same as training optimally for getting stronger. Both will lead to getting bigger and both will lead to getting stronger (all other things being equal, nutrition etc.) but not in the same proportions. Add to this, as you already indicated, recruitment and muscle fibre type differences and their implications to programming...

2. I see you're doing cable crossovers? That is an example of purposely putting a lever in it's least mechanically effective position to transfer force. The reason for this from a bodybuilding perspective is to produce growth in an un-natural way, making parts of a muscle not normally particularly stimulated grow. This leads to looking bigger and 'freakier'. All good for the stage (once all other bases are covered so only in advanced trainees anyway really) but totally useless for any real-world, or more pertinently strength athletics purpose. In fact it's actually counter-productive seeing as you may generate mass growth that has no strength benefit yet is metabolically active tissue in effect 'draining your tank'.

Add to these issues that you are actively de-training firing sequences and motor skills by utilising bodybuilding specific training when your aim is strongman (this week) and a whole host of other issues I find it astounding you are pursuing this route when multiple knowledgeable people are advising against it.

Believe it or not I mean no offence Paul. I actually just can't help myself but to post when your journal is so ridiculous. I'd like to think you're actually a comedy genius doing this on purpose, I hope that's the case? I am actually jealous you are so strong whilst being so actively ignorant.

I am going to open a book on what you are going to focus on becoming world champion at next, for the next fortnight until you are bored anyway. I fancy you'll be a triple jumper next week?
