public swim at 11am on a Sunday will be a kid fest.

Best bet is find an early morning/late swim.

I can only go from what I have read, but it seems your concern is your weight? If that is the case, maybe wear a towel up to the pool, leave it by the side as you enter, swim then get out and wrap it round?

Theoretically when youre in the water people will only see your head, so its the inbetween bit that counts?

chaos said:Whilst Shane and Dave's ideas will obviously be the first you try Roll-Eyes why don't you try and find a time when the pool is really quiet or when old old people go. They really don't give a f**k what somone looks like (or can even see)! Give it a few months and you'll be more reem than Shaniac and strutting round the pool in animalprint pants!

I was thinking that, try and find out what times the pool tends to be quiet or go out of town if it makes it a little easier. Try and remain positive, just go for it bro, you can do it, little bit of will power, you will probably have the best feeling in the world after it. As the old saying goes, Do what your afraid to do..

Another option would be to make a big scene, make a lot of noise, do some belly slapping and then a massive bomb in to the pool. Do this regularly and you will soon have the pool to yourself Happy

It's not really that it's easy to say f**k it; it's just that in life it's usually your only option.

Davy i was thinking about Aith or Scalloway i'll look at the times for public swimming.

As for Belly Flops and Thrashing around i'd rather just keep my Head out of the water.

Chris your right there if you didnt do the things you were afraid of you'd do f**k all.

Nick - i try and laugh at myslef a lot its kind of a coping mechanism for me alsways has been. but time need a changing and going back to what Chris said that fear or mental barrier needs addressed especially for the furture when Little things start coming and i want to go to the pool with them.

That is a very good point mate. Although once you are there with kids you are so busy worrying what they will do next there is no time to worry about anyone looking at you Happy

If you are coming down to Scalloway for a swim you can give me a shout, may be able to join you

Think about the poor bas***ds with no limbs who like to swim that will make you feel less sorry for yourself,at your age you need to loose your fear of others and their concrens and get on with your life ,and to be honest mate ,what makes you think theve all got nothing better to do than look at you !

The best way to overcome a mental barrier is baby steps mate , pick a day in advance and stick to it but just go to the pool , no swimming , if there a viewing area grab a cuppa and chill out for a bit , get used to the place so you feel comfortable and you can see whats going on with no pressure , you will be able to see that no one is paying any real attention to anybody else ,just getting on with their swim , when your slap bang in the middle of a situation its all too easy to feel that everyone is looking at you so stepping back into a comfort zone can put things back into their true perspective , when you do feel comfortable enough to go swimming , again set a date and just go and remember that any "looks" you do get are purely because your a new face round the pool and nothing else , after a couple of sessions you wont remember what you were worried about Happy

Thing said:I have a couple of mental barriers that i would like to push through to help me feel better about myself.
the first one is to get over this Swimming barrier as its a real stumbling block as I don't really like getting stared at and in the over weight category and people impressions its been hard for me to get over anywhere near breaking this barrier down.
I know its easy to say f**k it and not worry about it but really its not that easy for me.

does anyone have a similar problem with mental barriers that are stopping you from doing what you would like to do and have you found away of breaking that barrier.

Fella I was the same as you this time last year. I hated the idea of being around people with my top off, so swimming was a big no no.

You just gotta do it though, get into the pool and start swimming. I can't say how I did it, because I just did it. No long thoughts or anything.
Now I still look like the japanese whales might be interested should they come close, but I can swim quite a bit Happy

Oh after you have been a few times you will start seeing plenty of people bigger, fatter, uglier and with worse mental and physical hangups than you Happy

I know where you're coming from, its silly but I dont take my top off at the beach and hate to swim, I just get self conscious and no idea why, the better half aways gets in piss with me about it and is on my case to just get in/take my top off!

Cant offer any advice, except to say I hope you can conquer your confidence problem.....low self esteem in people is hard to see (especially given your such a nice bloke)
