If youve had your custom made kit stolen by metal thieves whilst preparing for wsm do you get a qually spot? Grin

I'm afraid I don't necessarily agree. Most of the people I've ever spoken to have no idea how to relate to how heavy these things are (other than they are all "heavy")that you guys can move around. I find it sooooooo much more interesting and entertaining because I have my own little PBs that I can compare. If people had participated at some point in even something similar then it's much easier to relate and enjoy.

Not sure they need to relate, just be capitvated. My dad never lifted anything heavy yet he Adored watching Geoff Capes and the other and found it very entertaining. But i also agree with higher participation rates , increases intrest and amount of money that can be earned, therefore more comps , coverage and money.

Agree, I got into strongman (watching and always wanted to do it) when I was a kid and didn't have a clue how heavy stuff was but I could see it was big and awkward and only monsters could shift it!

with regards to the uk vs usa subject and why they might be pumping out more monster freak athletes than us, you have to address the fact that, plain and simple, they have more people to choose from than us.

if the rule says that, for every 60million people (population of britain), you get two Terry and Loz super freak athletes, well USA has 300million people so they get 10 guys (and i actually dont think that they do have 10 guys of Terry and Lozs standard, but it might be near that). so the size of the population does have to be considered.

but i cant think of one possible downside to having a MUCH better competition system in this country, if or no other reason than it gives the existing guys more exposure and potential to earn money.

i even bored myself writing that first part !

I think population will have a massive effect on the output yet it does not replace a brilliant development systems such as Bulgarian WL, Jamcian Sprinting.
the USSR and China (whilst having huge populations) produced some of the best athletes ever becuase of their systems.

At my Uni we have a Chinese badminton player only plays for his province, and he killed like the 7th or 8th best in the UK. He was shocked at what our level of badminton was and only suffered one defeat since being in England against an Indonisan international. Just used this story to illustrate the development and exposure is massively important (and hes definately not on PEDS
Grin )

So surely therefore if we increase the exposure and invovlement of Strongman, get good coaches and a good development system, then it can only improve the quality.

You talk about Jamaican sprinting, Bulgurian, USSR & Chinese WL for example....all benefit from a high level of government funding

Strongman will never be governemnet funded. Finding enough sponsors, memberes etc to support such a structure is a massive ask

I see no evidence that the US structure is producing a massive amount of potential WSM winners when compared to the UK and other European countries, when taking population figures into account (all IMO)

Great chance for guys to prove themselves. Top 5 will be at wsm

Brilliant news.

Lithuania is tiny yet spits out multiple incredible strength athletes. i don't think population really speaks volumes here.

popularity is the more important factor and as i said earlier guys have been trying to chase z for years which helps! they have a number of televised comps throughout the year that all the top guys compete in! we don't have that at the moment. also many of the top guys over there train together

I was going to post this! they had 3 athletes at wsm, and got 2 in the final with blekaitis only just missing out. population of 3.2 million. I think we should find out what they are doing there!

considering iceland only has 300,000 people, whatever they do seems to have produced many great strength athletes over the years

"from the eighth to eleventh centuries ,marauding vikings travelled along the coastlines of northern Europe, known and feared for their ferrocity and physical might. They sailed in their longboats powered by mighty oarsmen who sat in places according to their strength. To determine their respective abilities, oarsmen had to lift huge graded rocks, very like McGlashen stones and the larger the rocks they liftd the more prestigious the seat they held on the longship"

Their lifestyles and dealth tolls caused selective breeding which is inherited by the purebred inhabitants of today, producing more genetically gifted athletes per head than any other country in the world.
The boys are brought up on stories of heroism and sagas of Viking legacy .
The land is harsh and has very few flat plains so team games are replaced with solo games such as lifting or throwing. This arguably produces a hungrier solo athlete rather than a half arsed team player who only has to play at 60% then rely on the rest of the team for support?

That's how I made it into the first team.
