i dont know if it is or not,but paused squats dont seem to hurt my dodgy knee as much as normal squats.

Knee wraps can be a problem if you go very low and they bunch up just behind the knee joint, in effect forcing it to open. This can stretch some of the ligaments at the sides and the front crucia ligament in particular which may become a problem if you sit in the low position a lot.

I squat raw.

If you keep everything tight, I wouldn't imagine so - nor would you be deriving the potential benefits from pause squats. If you simply relax the legs, I'd imagine that this could have negative effects. But there are many factosr involved. FWIW, I remember that somebody (Stuart McRobert?) warned against pause squats because of knees, but I've always found them a good exercise, despite my decrepit joints.

You really hate your knees don't you ? Just take a hammer to them and save time and all that tedious squatting.

Wrap and dig, smooth and fluent

I've always thought Stuart McRobert was very good at disguising total bulls**t as real World advice.

On the contrary - my health comes first.

That's why I'm enquiring.

Surely my body would be letting me know if I was causing harm?

I'm the least injured u105 strongman that I know!

Thing is though Wayne, if you wear away the cartilage in your knee over time, when its gone its gone but you won't notice it while it's happening most likely.

Just an example, not necessarily associated with paused squats.

It's all about building up slowly and over time, let your body recover and learn to recover quickly and toughen up imo.

Same as with boxing, if you jump in to start beating up a 200lb punchbag full of densely packed sand, you will f**k your hands up, if you start with an 100lb bag you can build up that strength and joint integrity.

I think it's more impact stuff that does that (correct me if I'm wrong someone). That's why I keep farmer's/yoke training to an absolute minimum. Long-term joint health is always at the back of my mind.

I'm a big fan of rest, and only train twice a week.

Definitely that bothers things more, however that does have something to do with your moving technique, like people that run and hit the floor flat on the feet or people who land on the ball of the foot and soften the descent.

This year I have had nothing but knee problems. I have never had bad knees when squating in the past but am 36 now. It seems that when I squat full depth I pull something on the inside of my kneecap where that teardrop muscle is and my knee goes clicky and sore. My knees seem to hurt when squating down even without weight and feel sore all of the time. I find the only way I can prevent it is by squating onto a bench that is slightly above parallel as the problem seems to happen when I hit a certain depth. It gets me down a bit but am still trying to train around the problem, dont enjoy my squats anymore and feel bad about not hitting depth but it is all I can do at the moment. Not sure if deadlifting causes a problem with the bar rubbing on my kneecap when it goes up. I had a few motorbike crashes when younger and banged both knees up which has perhaps made them a bit sensitive. I think pausing at the bottom of the squat would cause major problems for me but touching down onto a bench seems to help me somehow.

I do raw paused squats most squat sessions and have never had problems with my knees.
