Interesting question..... Is it possible to love your sport too much may it be strongman, powerlifting, oly lifting, is there such thing as toi obcessed or sacrificing too much? Id be interested to c how much people spend £££££ how many hours are sacrificed and wat people have to give up to continue doing wat they love! Any comments and thoughts welcome....

i think jonis right here

this sport what ever it may be can be a hobby to some people can be there only thing in there life to some people apart form family.

some people do it as fun some people have dreams of getting somewhere in there sport.

no matter what it takes some kind of dedication and sacrifice no matter how big it maybe

it all depends on what th eindividual whats to do it for

some people do it for self satisfaction some people do it to show others how strong they are asnd people do it cause they got the bug and f**kign love it

one thign i can say though is no one can judge anyone in there sport for the reasons why they do it cause no matter what we are all different from the people who dont do this sport. we have a different mind set and a different apporach to life than people that dont train

people can only give as much as they can due to money time family etc but it dont mean there less than the person whi gives 6o hours at the gym and spens s**t load on supplements and has no children or family so all they care about is them sealves (nothign wrong in this) each has there own battle mentally and physically with there sport

Ur right by sayin it depends on circumstance ie kids, missis etc n obv the hours u work n the money u earn if u pick up 1k a month u cant spend 500 on trainin so it comes down to how much of ur total u can afford to, n as we all knw uve got enough £££ ive got a little girl n wrk shifts so i knw how difficult it can be n i knw of others who av it ten times harder n still manage!!

I have two kids and a misses. I manage to spend 12 hours a week training; 12 hours a week on Sugden barbell. Get 12 hours of grief off the misses for doing those things but still mamange to find time for work and kids. Somebody said: 'I don't have time to lift weights I make time'. This is true for everybody one here, even some of the pros have jobs - it's a balancing act for sure.

But you can get too much of a good thing as I am experiencing, along with a few others on here. This weeks training has been so laboured and awful, lifting my head off the pillow has been a task in itself. So rest also needs to play a part in it to. But in answer to the question 'Is it possible to love your sport too much' no so long as you make time for those who love you.

PS I also wank 12 hours a week - so do I love that too much Grin

I reckon so long as you make time for others that are important in your life (I have 3 kids) and the sport, hobby or whatever you want to call it doesn't have too much of a negative impact on that then I don't think you can 'love it' too much no...

I would go so far as to say I'm 'slightly addicted' to doing what I do. I'm certainly never going to set the sport alight in the world of Powerlifting, I've never even competed yet, and when I do I don't expect anything more than a wandering lazy eye from anyone around to witness it at the time. But I do it for myself and I dont expect anyone else to be interested or impressed (I gave up on the missus long ago Grin )

Over the last 6 months ive got more and more into strongman through training, doing my first comp in Sept, organising the Blackpool comp and planning training for comps ive got coming up.

I train 3 nights during the week for roughly 1.5hrs then do events on a Sunday which can take anywhere between 3-4 hours or if i train at Olympic then i can be out of the house most of the day.

Luckily for me my missus works long shifts 3-4 days per week so she is usually at work when i get home from the gym therefore it doesnt effect her and she is an absoulte diamond when it comes to the rest of the time. Even cooking/ preparing most of my meals, paying towards equipment and even litle things like bringing me drinks when im training at home.

But when im not training and we are off together then its our time together - i thinks it important to have a healthy balance between your sport whether it be weightlifting, powerlifting or strongman.

At the end of the day there is more to life than your sport/ hobby and if you keep that im mind then it keeps everything balanced and everyone happy.

to you there is more to life to some people this is there life and not just a hobby. it is all about peoples own perception.

some people in there sport want to make it big even if they havent got the potential to do it mentally they belive they can and theres nothign wrong with that

its each to there own

And most of the time it's the people, that others say don't have the potential, that make it to the top!

I think that it can be good to be driven.

I don't really socially do much with my life in that I'm not interested in relationships, I don't really like drink or pubs and I spend a lot of time indoors. I used to be that party guy who would be at every party until work then next day, then party when work finished, but then when I took ill and lost my job etc. as a result, my lifestyle changed dramatically. Because I literally didn't have money, I lived more like I lived when I raised myself as a child in that I would go hunting, fishing and trapping for my food, build my shelter and generally just spend time in the woods on my own. This went on for a couple of years.

Now I'm in a "proper" house with enough money to go training twice a week and an internet connection. The internet seems to take up a lot of my time these days. I spend a lot of time outside the gym doing things based around powerlifting in that I deliberately rest for long periods, I eat very often and avoid parties or whatever as to heal better. Because I'm pretty frail nowadays and don't heal as fast as other people, I have to do these things as well as possible if I want to progress in this sport. I know that it's going to be a long and ongoing road but that's what gives me the love for this sport. It's the fact that I have an idea where I am and I can see what's ahead of me if I do the right things.

Powerlifting, even though I'm a beginner in the sport, gives me a sense of purpose and direction that I'd otherwise not have in my life. Because of this, I feel like I have a right to love it as much as I want.

Yeah its definatly possible to become too obsessed with your sport ive known people to lose relationships, a social life, a lot of money just so they could train at the sport they competed in. Psychologically this is unhealthy but if thats the individuals choice and they get a lot of enjoyment out of this who am I to criticise.
