TL.DR - Long boring post about illness with no useful information whatsoever - warning.

I've lifted weights since I was 12 or 13, I'm 44 in a couple of weeks and I've always been average to ok - 200/152/232 at 120, not great but over 400/300/500 in old money.

My last post in my last journal was on the 17th Feb this year, but so much has happened I feel it is time for a new one, although there will not be much to report for a while.

In the last few days of February I had some stomach pain and vomiting that refused to go away. Eventually it got so bad that I called my GP out to my home and he told me to go to hospital.

After hours and hours of waiting in A&E I was told I had acute pancreatitis, everyone became quite serious and started to do stuff.

A lot of what followed was morphine clouded (which is not as much fun as it sounds - especially when the pain is intense) but I had scans, tests, drips, oxygen masks, CT and MRI scans and a load of other things.

Turns out that my pancreas decided to digest itself and I lost around 90% of it - dead and gone forever. As it was on it's way out it decided to try and take some other organs with it (lungs and liver mainly) but they were ok - I did go Simpson family yellow for a while.

The Doctors had "the talk" with my family and I was also told that death was a real possibility in the immediate future. In between the machines pumping and beeping and the pain killers I started to think about the talks I needed to give my three kids before I die - this is not something that I would recommend.

My wife had to somehow keep my business afloat, look after my kids and find some money to survive - I think she had a harder time than I did.

I was tube fed through my neck, directly into my bloodstream as my stomach could not process any food, which would have been ok if I hadn't got septicemia from it - a little bit more panicking and a stay in intensive care followed.

As time went on, my survival chances were increased and I recovered enough for them to send me home, - which was a bad idea as the dead bits of my pancreas were not finished with trying to kill me - they decided to create an infected pseudo-cyst.

Back to hospital for an external transgastric drain to be fitted. This is a tube that pokes out from my stomach and drains a load of disgusting stuff into a bag that I carry around. The tube and bag remain in me as I type.

I was transferred to UCLH in Euston, London for specialist care and a few operations. I waited there for a while with regular scans, injections, blood tests and all sorts of things that made me feel like a science project. I was fed through the nose into my lower intestine this time.

Not finished with trying to kill me, I had a "life threatening, major arterial bleed" that meant my drain bag filled with blood and I involuntarily shat out nearly a litre of it. My wife got "the call" to come and see me as they couldn't get blood into my sealed up veins and couldn't get a blood pressure reading.

A short operation to plug the gaps via arterial surgery followed and more sitting around recovering followed.

I was sent home, 4 months after I got ill - with a tube coming out of my stomach and 5 and a half stone lighter.

This is where I am now, I await the removal of the tube, which annoyingly has filled with a little blood yesterday and I am trying to eat my way up the scale (half a stone has been regained)

I am walking around, can climb stairs and have a PB of 10 squats. I have to take tablets with every meal, which isn't a big deal really.

I can eat anything (no booze) - the dietitian recommended a diet of high calorie food (which is awesome but I don't have the capacity for big meals anymore)

So ..... this journal will hopefully have me starting weights again in a few weeks/months, I spent nearly 4 months in bed so I have no muscle mass whatsoever - if I can I will take some before and after photos, if "muscle memory" exists it should be a transformation.

No exercise for me today as I want to make sure I'm not bleeding for a day at least.

Sorry for the rambling post/thread starter.

Glad to hear you've come out of this alive.
Best wishes to you and your family going forward. Can't imagine what you've been through.

Good luck with the high calorie diet, might turn out to be fun.

My mate said "you've got 5 stone of eating ahead of you" - with an amazed look.

Thanks for your comment, stuff like this puts things in perspective.

Thank you gentlemen, I hope these pages will be filled with tales of weight lifting enjoyment and not details of ailments.
I spent a long time missing the feeling of a barbell and the taste of good food

Had the operation to remove the tube and internalise the drain yesterday, an endoscopy (camera down the throat) - done under a sedative, as opposed to a general anaesthetic, which was ok.

Picked up a barbell today which someone appears to have made a whole lot heavier (!)

Did empty bar squats, overhead press, bent over row, stiff leg deadlifts and calf raises - all for 10 reps.

Wiped me out.

Excited to be back doing this.

More empty bar stuff - still exhausting

Squats x 10
Press x 10
Bent Row x 15

2 sets of each

My return to the gym heralded some weight on the bar.

Bench - 2 x 10 empty bar and 5 x 10 with 30kg

Squats - the same but only managed 3 x 10 with 30kg

Genuinely very difficult but great to be lifting again
