It seems to me that when you get to the point where events are a race to shave a half-second here and there - as the squats were tonight, and the deadlifts were yesterday - that this is not ideal for a strongman comp. I'd rather see both bigger weights so more competitors don't get them all, and going for reps with the top weight rather than time to the top weight as the main decider.

Of course I'd rather see a rising bar for max weight, too, but I understand that that's probably not as good for TV.

Got to agree with you there Rick. Personally I like the barrel squat / deadlift events because I think they represent a good compromise between reps with a single weight and rising bar to max weight. But I totally agree that they are just not heavy enough now (same goes for the stones these days). I actually think on those events where it's a question of 0.5 seconds here or there, the vagaries of loading the barrels is enough to make the competition unfair.

On the commentary front it was funny to hear Nick Halling say that Jason Bergmann was losing his balance on the log press, only for Colin Bryce to explain gently to him that he was doing split jerks.

I like the barrells for the squats and deadlifts too, but agree with you that there can be too much discrepancy between speed of loading the barrells into the cage to make it unfair, maybe heavier barrells are needed?

I also like how Colin Bryce always corrects the other guy. He did it last night when Terry was deadlifting, the guy said something like Terry's not suited to it and wouldn't choose it as one of his favourite event, then Colin said something like "he's actually been working really hard at it these past couple of years". I mean, come on, he's pulling around 400 kilos now, can't really say it's a bad event for him lol

Agree with the others on the timing thing. If we go too far down the speed road then ultimately the WSM will be the sprinter who can carry a relatively light weight the fastest. I'm reluctant to criticise, but that commentator makes me cringe. A classic example of someone with a good TV voice (he sounds a bit like Stuart Storey and the other BBC athletics commentator) but who just doesn't know his subject. I seem to remember him saying the other night that someone with long arms was at a disadvantage in the deadlift!

At least John Inverdale's not fronting it any more. I hated his tongue-in-cheek, belittling-the-sport approach. I think Colin Bryce is really good. And, you won't be surprised that I'm asking this, but why not have a bench press - maybe barrel-loaded? Everyone asks "what can you bench?" so why not see what the strongman lads can do?

Martin you might get away with that golden leotard in powerlifting, but you never will in strongman Wink

Lol. I've been holding on to that one for years! Rob, I thought the white gear would be better for strongman! It would be interesting if they wore a shirt and couldn't get a touch on the lightest load.Grin Anyway, anyone who doesn't bench is a complete pussy...Tongue

There was an event in one strongman in Sweden, which had a apparatus like the squat and deadlift but for the Bench Press, and Magnus Samullson done 12 reps at 220KG.

Now that is something I would like to see, maybe for maz rep instead of max reps, I think Samullson has done 300KG in the gym raw Bench, so he might be able to do a bit more on that appuratus, maybe.

It is something I would love to see as wellHappy .

I also think a lot of these competitors could lift much heavier weights for distance and reps, but I think they are not so heavy so everyone has a good shot at the title, and it does make it more thrilling to watch, man that Marius just seems to get better and better, I wonder what he could bench?Tongue
