Thursday

Bench press
40kg warmup
All with comp command:
1x50k
1x55k
1x60k
fx65k but this was as close as it gets without actually succeeding the rep. Was pleased with that seeing as 65kg is my current touch and go PB since Monday. Must mean there is more there.

Push press
2x40k
2x40k
1x45k
1x45k
All reps I held over my head for 30s to work on stabilsing the bar over my head.

50 situps

4 Nation powerlifting competition write-up

The weekend: I travelled up with Joe B (thanks GrinGrin) on Friday and met my team-mates. Some truly awesome lifters there Grin Friday just tried to eat and not panic about squats because I was terrified about them. Saturday we had our weigh in at 8am at the hotel: weighed in light at 65.5kg and then had our equipment check before breakfast (too nervous to eat much). Then we were bused over to the venue for warm up etc. We were lifting in a school auditorium Happy

Goals:

300kg total - I thought that although hard i had a chance of making it.... maybe. But was really dubious all the same. Such short notice (3 weeks to train for it) and bad buildup in training too :?

Squat goal: 100kg - anything extra would be bonus. Didnt think 100 would go up on the day.
Bench press 60kg - anything more again bonus but 60kg had to go - it not i would deserve a real kick up the backside.
Dealift 140k - anything more = bonus because I was finding 140 sometimes impossible in training.

Squats

Warmups: 55kg x 3 ; 70kg x 2; 85kg x 1

Opening lift: 90kg (I had planned 85 but went for 90k instead) - nice and deep, nice and easy - cleared easily.

Second lift: 97.5kg - beautifully deep and again not that hard to press - all cleared.

Third lift: 102.5k PB it felt deep and it looks deep to me - anyway got one red light out of 3 which means i was passed as a lift Grin

Bench press

Warmup: 8x20kg, 3x40kg, 2x50kg, 1x55kg

Opener: 55kg easy no problems

Second 60kg easy not problems

Third: 62.5kg failed - bench press competition curse. I have yet to make my final bench at a competition  and 62.5k shoud have been EASY. Lots to say here. First of all - although my bench consistency has improved - this rep was not consistent. My problem was that I controlled the descent too much, and in the pursuit of maintaining the tension at the bottom of the rep, I paused the bar too high off my chest so the judge waited for it to touch of course and by the time I did and I got the press command, my strength and form were gone. Lesson learned Grin Work bench.

Deadlifts

I love deadlifts in competition. I can't train these well at all. A competition deadlift is a different lift from training deadlift. I find even an opening competition DL really tough in training but at comps they fly up. I feed off the adenaline and aggression from failed bench and dont hold anything back for this last event Grin Love it. Best way to train to DLs is to do them light and strict form in training and accessory stuf and just max out at comps I think.

Warmups: 1x95kg, 1x110kg ( i think)

Opener: 127.5k weird number but easy easy Grin

Second (this was a big jump but one JP has had me training though it surprised the Welsh manager a bit): 140k my pre-comp PB and was a bit nervous about it but in competition I dont have a choice - I won't let myself believe I will do anything but make my lift. Too much adrenaline to remember if this felt hard or not but it went up smoothly and well.

Third lift: I wanted to play safe for the team and myself and go for 145; JP wanted me to go 150; the Welsh manager suggested 147.5k to make a nice round total of 310 and because it was guaranteed I could make that. In retrospect 150kg would have gone up but retrospect is a fine thing and 310 is a cool total to have  Adrenaline was crazily high. The lift was hard but not impossible and there was a little more there in the tank. The lockout is where I struggled but made it well and was passed by all judges Grin PB

Total 310 GrinGrinGrin thats a total PB as previousl to the comp my total was 305kg.

Wales woman's team came 3rd. Men's Wales team came 2nd. I came 2nd in my weight category

I then spent the day helping the Wales men with their warmups and equipment and watching the awesome lifting by many people from Sugden and Riot forums - and others I know from my very limited experience in competitive amateur powerlifting.

In the evening there was a presentation dinner and was great chatting to everyone and getting some of their wisdom. Also managed to find people who will help me as I begin to consider and train equipped lifting which sadly (and believe me I dont want to do it) is the only way I can hope to reach a good level in powerlifting in the next 10 years. I need to be equipeed and I need to be patient and if I do it right then I have as good a chance as anyone.

Thanks so much JP for your support as usual and particularly the slaps on the back even though I wasnt listening to most of what you were saying to me  HUGE thank you to Buzz-star making the video on youtube. Thanks to all the people at the comp who are too many to name who made the weekend an awesome and helpful learning experience and I hope to meet you all again GrinGrinGrinGrin

Goal: NW Equipped competition with knee wraps for squats in 6 week's time :?

Well done! Unfortunately (?) equipped is the only way to go if you want to make a mark in the sport - which you clearly can - and catch Jordy (which you also can). But that's in the future. For the present, just bask in what you've achieved and learned this weekend - about yourself and from others.

Hmm not sure I can bask in anything but I am far too shattered to think of anything other than resting Roll-Eyes Completely, brain-bogglingly, exhausted!!! But as soon as I am recovered I am itching to have a go at squatting with knee wraps Grin

Friday at Unit 20 and with knee wraps

Travelled up to Edi today and after helping to set up Unit 2 for the Unit 20 Strongman challenge tomorrow I settled down for my first training since my comp.

Bronco showed me how to power snatch so I did some powersnatches with an empty bar and found it quite intense and quite tiring.

Squats
Unequipped:
4x50kg
3x70kg
3x80kg felt quite tough actually
With knee wraps
3x60kg wow so easy!
3x70kg
3x80kg felt so nice!
2x90kg started to feel it in the legs but a lot easier from the bottom than raw
2x100kg so easy!!!!

Unequipped:
3x80kg ouch tough!!!

Overhead: 3x3x40kg
