Nice session mate!

Good luck this weekend - just go Balls To The Hospital Wall and see what happens. I think you can do pretty well...

Would be cool to make the cut/finals with some even stronger events for you there?

topi is the man to beat on saturday Happy looking strong for it mate!

aye, it shown on the finnish BBC, not live though but only with one day lag, instead of half a year which we are too often used to in strongman...

it was the dream to make it to the finals, and i like viking press, and would REFUSE to be last in that event among the finalists, but alas, only 6 guys make it through so i am not putting on any pressure on me about qualifying.

The events are such that direct predictions are hard to make, i might do really well and be 15th, or 5th, no way of telling how i would place with my current abilities. I dont know the guys in finland well enough to predict.

All i know there are a lot of guys who are faster and stronger than me so i am not too optimistic Grin

Did not qualify to finals, but two first events went really well and I was 6th after two events, was stunned. viking press went to s**t and game was over.

Thanks folks Happy

The feelings about the comp are a mixed bag. I was stronger than in the past, and I could feel it. At the same time the lack of strongman event training in the past two weeks was evident.

Basically I went all out on the first two events, as you should, but my body was not conditioned to take the punishment. In a weird way I underestimated my own sport, I did normal gym barbell training and tried to do some conditioning with light weights to get the blood and breathing going.

But strongman is a bit different. Its like getting ran over by a car on every event where you have to work full blast with near maximal weights for a long time. For this normal gym training or light conditioning is a poor substitute to actual strongman event training.

So quick run down of events. Weather was abysmal, but its the same to everyone so it makes no difference. In the running order I was last, 17th - so basically I went out last, and in the videos you see me going head to head with someone from the Open weight class, who also had an odd number of athletes.

1. Wheelbarrow carry & sandbag load.

Who knows about the weights but the estimates were that the wheelbarrow started at a bit over 200 and then you load two 120kg sandbags, of which would then increase the weight in hands maybe about 60kg (you had to place them in the middle of the wheelbarrow), and as such would be 350ish in the end i think. Its all just numbers, but I saw many really strong top guys fail to finish the distance, grip was giving out and it looked very hard.

but as I started it i thought it wasnt too bad, and I just plodded along, sandbags were easier than i thought and the carry was just really painful. End was VERY hard but I managed to finish the distance.

6th out of 17

2. powerstairs, 200kg blocks up 5 stairs.

In the practise I fist failed to load it at all, and then got a one gruelling rep. Thats pretty frightening just before the comp is about to start Happy Again saw a lot of strong guys struggle a lot, and hardly anyone finished it. I thought to just pace myself and use the time wisely. The problem was not the weight, but the height of the block and the stairs. It was very hard to get it over the edge and in the end every rep i did cleared the edge with just like a millimetre!

7 steps, and shared 5th place i think.

3. Viking press

Then it went to s**t. Every bit of my body was destroyed, biceps cramping, traps destroyed, legs gone. Familiar feeling for anyone in the game, but this time it was just sapping, and there was not much power left. Abymal result, 5 reps and shared place around 10-12 place, and dropped three positions to 9th because the points were so evenly matched (i think just three points to 6th, which would have been 3 more reps approx.)

the amount of old guys in the finals gave me some hope though to still have my year in the finals Wink

Thanks to all support messages online and in person!

having an overhead as the 3rd event is murder! IMO you use the whole body so much in OH making it the 3 event can change a guy with a 140 OH into a guy with a 120 OH

Still a good showing, I agree that that 3rd (and last????) event must have been awful.

BTW I met Stefan Ramseier and a couple other chaps in Burgdorf this week-end. Nice guys, should be a fun comp.

I didnt realise this was this weekend! good work mate, especially considering your lack of prep. im with you regarding sm conditioning. its easy lifting to your best in the gym with ideal warmups and conditions but a whole different ball game after busting your ass in 2 events beforehand.

the equipment and event choices look great. what were they in the final?

they had to drop stones due to rain, so it was car deadlift for reps and sandbag load race (which felt comfy), deadlift would have been tough but loading i would have loved.

NEXT YEAR!

worried that the lack of conditioning will hurt in switzerland as well, but that is a much lighter comp. Hope to get couple sessions in the gym for it though...

onwards guys!

Great effort mate!

Wheelbarrow load looks pretty f**king cool - I want a go!

Can't believe it was Viking press that let you down - usually a banker for you! Having said that, 9th out of 17 is still pretty decent...

Next year you'll qualify!!

it was VERY cool mate, and i think with your grip beastness and sandbagging ability you would have done well in that - as long as you didnt need to pick it up too often Grin

Dont think you would have dropped it though, only two guys did it without drops i think so it was hard.

The distance was over 40 metres too, they always make them long in finland!

hey coming to think of it, havent mentioned it on my log that i have been using just a cheap strengthshop gripper, 150lbs one which i have been closing for sets of 50-70 reps per hand. That has been the only grip training i have been doing. And long holds too, just hold the gripper shut for like couple minutes.

I think grippers are generally pretty s**t for strongman, because the max closing strength doesnt really translate to anything of much use, but then i just thought of doing the super high reps and see what happens.

And seems like the grip was ok Happy

...need to get back to the gym to do some overhead...

Good work mate, shame about the viking press costing you as it looks like the final events would have been good. We will be able to see the tv prog via some sort iplayer shananigans?
