Yeah good stuff Rickster. Although you better get working on those squats. Wouldnt want a toothpick AND a strongman beating you to 400lbsGrin

Monday 16/4 at Adlington

Squat Goblet 60#x5, barbell 65x5, 110x3x2, 130x3, 145x2,2,2,1.

As recently-usual: fast out of the hole, slow at the top. Could have been far worse, though.

Good Mornings 20x5, 65x5, 85x5, 95x5.

All technically PBs since I've never done them before. I liked these, they're really going to help the weak point of my squat, and I shall do them often.

I think the plan now is to squat a "heavy" single or double a couple of times and then drop back for two or three sets of fives about 20kg lighter. I still need to be doing reps, for form and speed and confidence, but I also need to get the feel of a heavy bar and just get used to the fact that *big squats don't feel easy*. At the moment, that throws me, and I fail them in my head.

Very enjoyable sesh with Roberto, Olly, Davo and The Mighty Boar. Feeling quite cheerful now.

I would say that it's time to stop worrying about form Rick - they look fine on the video.

It's time to get stronger! The good mornings should help and DE or band resisted squats probably would to force you to get more speed into the top - because like we all agreed last night, it's a piece of piss for the bottom two thirds.

Im different to the other guys, the only place I think you need to get some strength for a big PB is in your head. I think if you attacked the weights from the bottom, ie where they are easy, you'd shoot through your sticking point. You only seem to try hard when it gets hard...

Rob's point about speed/band squats is a good one. You're far too used to squatting slowly.

I agree with Olly, I think.

Two very interesting things from that video:

- I'm not falling forwards on the first one of either double, only the second. So it's not that I can't hold it up for some technical reason; I'm either too weak, or too stupid. My suspicion is the latter.

- the total elapsed time per squat is far, far less than I thought. They feel like real grinders, and they aren't.

I went through a similar thing, learning to keep pulling when a DL wasn't easy and to realise that just because it wasn't lightening-quick doesn't mean it's hard. I need to do that on squats too now.

So. What to do now?

Lift heavy!

I agree with Rob - those squats look fine. Just get some weight on the f**king bar and get some confidence man!

Wednesday 18/4

Jackson deads, week 3; speed singles @ 85%.

Deadlifts 60x8, 100x3, 140x1, 170x1, 185x1x5.

All fast and nice except the last one, on which I shot my hips a bit.

Rack pulls 70x2, 120x2, 160x2, 200xf, 1.

Didn't take the 200 seriously enough the first time. From just below the knee, where these are, they're harder than off the floor!

Deads were worked in with Adam and Jo today, both of whom were pulling well. Later Alex showed up and kicked some ass on deads too.

Partial chins 3x5, supersetted with

EZ bar extensions bar+30x8, 10, 12.

Narrow-grip pulldowns 98x10x2. These were strict and ridiculously easy. No idea why.

Stretching, home.

Today I have been doing massive amounts of tidying, moving stuff, and general bendy-over stuff. As I was Tuesday evening. On Monday I squatted, on Wednesday I deadlifted.

I have a lower back pump the size of a box of man-size tissues. It throbs like, well, like Jonny when Rob puts his singlet on. I cherish it.

On Saturday I have to shift quantities of furniture down spiral staircases in the Midlands, into a van, and in and out of this (ground floor thank christ) flat.

I may not do speed squats tomorrow after all Wink.

Friday 20/4

Coan bench week 10.

Bench 20x8, 60x5, 80x3, 100x1, 110x1, 120x1, 130x1+f,1,f.

Close-grip Bench 115x2 PB, f.

Incline Bench 60x5, 107.5x thought better of it.

After 9 excellent weeks of bench, today I was officially teh suxxor. It's been a hard week out of the gym, and today I was a bit of a wreck - the bad foot has flared up and I'm limping and in considerable pain. Felt fantastic up to 110, less so at 120, and at 130 my forearm tendons started hurting in the descent, which screws my line completely. This should have been x2x2, and I certainly have the strength - but not today.

Full marks to Adam for excellent catching on the first fail at 130, which was dropping fast towards my face.

We'll see how I feel over the next few days; I may take a little break. I feel destroyed, and I'm doing a lot of hard physical work tomorrow too.

f**k.

Chin up Rickster, everyone has an off-day now and again, and you still got a PB regardless. Few days off and some pork pies and you'll be busting the rest of the routine open.

Aye head up Rick, sounds like a tough few days. I think there might also be a pattern emerging whereas you go back to school from holidays and seem to get very tired thus effecting gym. Might be an idea to schedule your light weeks with this if you think its an issue.
