SteBennett | Advice on running a comp please | 17-12-2013 @ 21:45
Average hamstring at best Member 4663, 588 posts | Next year I'm looking at running my first strongman competition. I was hoping I could collect as much advice as possible by people who have run there own comps, about all aspects? I've already sort of decided on events and pretty much got the equipment apart from a couple of bits and bobs, I could just do with some pointers about how to put the day together. Thanks in advance

Interesting Events are always good. What were you planning for the events? And What categories you going for? Women's Strongest man is always interesting to watch tbh. Some are beastly...

Consider the running time when you decide what events you will run and how many competitors you have competing. There is nothing worse than a comp with 40+ athletes going one at a time that drags on all day. Saying that, it is possible to have quick run comp with a larger number of athletes if you run lots of head to heads and have quick turn around between events. That is hard to do though. Personally, I'd go for 20 max for your first comp. It is tempting to do all the fun stuff, like choosing events, first but I always think its best to Get the foundations in place before you get to that. Things like funding, helpers, venue, insurance are best to get sorted early doors in my opinion. Don't treat the athletes like cash cows. I see too many promoters whacking up entry fees and cramming in as many athletes as possible to rake in as much cash from them as possible. These guys ARE your show. Treat them well and they will come back and want to compete at comps you put on in the future. Go and help out at other people's comps. Build good relationships with other people in the sport. People will be more likely to want to help you out if you have helped them in the past.

I very much agree with this, I have fallen foul of this in the past and think you need to get the money up front or you will have a lot of no shows. Also if having weight classes consider timings for weigh ins to leave enough time between weighing in and starting the comp and sourcing some calibrated scales.

If you do happen to cock it up, make up a completely implausible lie about it, act like nothing happened and ignore anyone who mentions it....no actually don't do that, that would be silly.

This ^ also a good idea to anchor score sheets down with a messy tacky pot so they are not blown away by unseasonally high winds , gives you 2 perfectly reasonable reasons for not producing score sheets after comp
