Too much you think?

I'm aiming for something like 4500 kcal a day, which breaks down to 40% protein, 40% carbs and 20% fat..

Mate, 200 is probably more than enough, but even if you aim for 220-230, it makes 400g look ridiculous. Up your carbs.

I had a go on that myfitnesspal thing but it didn't seem to have some basic things. Do you sign up and get a bigger database or something? or did you just click on "food" on the homepage ?

Yeah I don't really need to eat 400 g protein a day, 230g would be better as that's the commonly cited "1g per lb".

I will drop the mid afternoon protein shake then (50g), use 1 scoop of whey in before bed shake instead of 2 (25g), swap the cottage cheese in the evening for some carbs? Or is that not wise, because carbs in the evening are more likely to be stored as fat?

I use the Blackberry version, and just select my foods as dinner cooks Happy

But yes, I had to sign up (for free), and everything I eat is on there, even shakes.

Myth. Fiction. Broscience. Pseudoscience. False. Am I making myself clear? lol

Carbs at night will not preferentially be stored as fat... not at all. However, carbs at night should help you sleep better. Quite a bit of evidence regarding this. A high protein meal, at anytime in the day, will make you slightly more alert and awake (or just keep you at the same level of awakeness, ie no effect). But carbs, on their own, make you sleepy. Having protein with the carbs negates the sleep inducing effects of carbs, but leave out the protein and you'll be sleepier. Having a purely carb rich mini-meal is an ideal thing to have before going to bed, if you want good sleep. And you do want good sleep for a whole catalogue of reasons I'm sure you're aware of.

Skip the protein before bed, have some carbs.

Myfitnesspal is good, and has had nearly everything I've ever looked for. It just gets a little tricky for home cooked stuff, but you can either search around and estimate for something similar to yours, or weigh&measure all of your stuff and save it into the database for future use.

I've got the iphone app too and it's got a barcode scanner for scanning packages of foods.

One thing it didn't have is McDonald's new Texas BBQ burger, but it's new.

Ok
Grin

Will work with more carbs and see how these fairs. Ought to mention that when I'm not in the gym I'm mostly sitting on my arse all day.

EDIT: I don't think myfitness pal is great for everything though. I set the weight gain for 1 lb a week @224lb bw and it says I only need 3310 kcal a day Confused
