You'll do splendidly, you've got the right attitude for this malarky. Mr Al is always in the know about these little known comps isn't he!

Sudburys Strongest Man 2012

Today was the day of my second fur-ore in to the strongman world. Was only a small competition but the nerves and excitement were in full flow when I arrived at 9.45, which turned out to be an hour and a half early! It did give me plenty of time to register have a look at the equipment and round the very fine gym that was good enough to host this competition. I was soon handed my t-shirt and after putting it on it soon became very real and time to get my head right and prepare for the first event, the overhead medley.

Overhead Medley -

This consisted of a 50-60kg barrel, 70kg axle, 75kg log and a 50kg dumbbell. I was the 2nd from last person to attempt this and after having to take my 20th piss of this still young day I had missed most other competitors attempts so had no idea what I was up against. Anyway my name was called and up I stepped to the awkward looking barrel waiting for the starting signal. To my surprise the barrel went up in one motion, the axle pretty much the same as I under-estimated the weight and nearly lost it, next the log up and managed to strict press it quite nicely which I was pleasantly surprised with then fired up the dumbbell. I happily managed to get 1st in this event but I am unsure of the time, only knowing me and one other competitor managed the dumbbell.

Farmers for Distance -

The weight in each hand had been set at 100kg, it was a 20 metre course and turn at the end for as many length as possible in 60 seconds. Unusually you could use straps which I was taken aback at but on the other happy as it would be easier on the mitts. Again I was in the same fortunate position of starting second from last. I knew the target was at least 60 metres to take the lead so off I set the first 40 metres felt lovely but messed up the turn and had to have a few side steps before righting myself and finally running out of time at the 75 metre mark putting me in the lead, which turned out to be enough for the win making 2 for 2 so far.

Tyre Flip for time -

This actually turned out to be 2 tyres bolted together weighing in the region of 300kg-350kg. This again was as many flips performed in a 60 second time limit. Going into my turn I knew 10 was the number to beat but unfortunately I fell short at 9 and came 3rd still meaning I was in 1st overall going into the break.

180kg Side Handle Deadlift for reps -

After an hours break which could have done with being slightly shorter in my humble opinion but that could be my impatience, it was finally time for the dreaded deadlift. After tweaking my lower back earlier in the week turning a gate that was far to heavy and awkward I was not particularly looking forward to it but my back felt ok and I was aiming for double figures. Being the competition leader I had the slight advantage of going last. The bar was set high at an impressive 23 reps which seemed like a very daunting task. I stepped at the bar and started lifting hoping to stay in a steady pace and that my back would hold out. I managed to 15 reps relatively comfortably but started to slow, having to take a brief pause. I squeezed a few more reps out, going right up to the time stopped but unfortunately only managed 22 reps which was enough for 2nd but can't help but ponder that without that brief pause I would have been able to get that last rep to tie for the lead but hey ho!

Keg Load and Tyre Drag Medley -

This consisted of loading a 50kg, 60kg and 100kg barrels into a cage from 10 metres out then moving on to a tyre drag which was estimated at about 200kg-ish. I was still in the lead going into this event but with only a slender 1 point lead. Up I stepped full of nerves, body feeling exhausted after the deadlifts but determined. I grabbed the first barrel moving as fast as I could, threw it into the cage and sprinted back for the second, grabbing the second barrel I was still moving at a decent pace but I was starting to slow and the run back was more of a quick-ish jog now. I heaved up the 100kg barrel and took it for a jog slamming it into the cage before jogging to the tyre and beginning the drag which was horrible from the moment I grabbed it with legs full of blood and feeling like my lung was going to fall out but I managed it in 39 seconds but alas 36 seconds was the winning time meaning second place again.

This lead to a 2 way tie between me and an other competitor. To my disappointment the other competitor had won 3 events to my 2 so was therefore given 1st place while I had to settle for what turned out to be a disappointing 2nd but overall I was happy with my performance and even though I will rue the few missed chances and mistakes, I can't complain as this was only my second competition. Overall though it was a cracking day out, a well run competition and a good bunch of lads. Now time to try and recover for Swindons next week.
