I guess it's easier to turn your back on a country when they've turned their back on you.

a cynical old scrote Member 68, 6844 posts SQ 255, BP 132.5, DL 250637.5 kgs @ 110kgs UnEq | There was a spell when it was rumoured he was going to lift fot Belarus but he came out and said that red tape got in the way, and that he had now (then) decided that he would lift for Russia or no-one. Massive loss to the sport. He is the first lifter for generations that has the personality and charisma to become a globally recognised figure in the sport. In my opinion both the Russian Federation and the IWF have missed a huge opportunity to push the sport to the public at large. If Misha had gone to the Olympics and won (which was obviusly an outside chance) he could quite possibly have come out of the Games as one of the big names that people were talking about and done the sport a whole lot of good. I am unspeakably sad that it looks like he is going back to Strongman I think it is a massive waste of a great lifter, no disrespect. I hope he now closes the book on his weightlifting career and tears the arse out of the SM scene.

He already understands our culture so well, don't we all get drunk and play the accordion to say thank you? Seriously though, its a shame he wont be at the games because he is such a huge personality that he could have boosted the profile at the sport at the games but sadly not to be.

His achievements to date in Strongman have appeared to have been based on his heart still being in weightlifting and him always seemingly having one eye on a return. It may be the case now that he focuses 100% on the SM stuff and reaches his full potential and picks up a few big titles, I for one hope he does. My insides are still weeping for weightliftings loss though!!!!

Thought he did 210-250 in a comp recently ? That would suggest he had a bloody good chance.

I read somewher that he does very little events training. Until this changes, he won't win WSM (and even if it did, he's not good enough to beat Shaw or Z IMO)

He did a nice 200 / 248 (448) at the Russia Cup, which was from what I can find, the best total put up by a Russian SuperHeavy in 2011. That total would have put him a comfortable 2nd in the 2011 Worlds and won him the European's by about 30k on the total. He also looked good for more. I think if he had kept injury free he could have got close to a 210 snatch and a 255-260 jerk for the Games and ceertainly have been in the hunt for a medal, if not chasing the big Iranian for Gold. My honest opinion is that he would have been Russia's best hope of honours at the Olympics from what I have seen from the other boys they've got. Chigishev is always injured, Lapikov has reputedly been popped for a positive sample, and the tow lads that placed well in the Russian Nationals are up there but havent delivered what Misha did in 2011. That being said, there is no saying that they wont wheel out a monster for the Games. Maybe Chigishev is going to come out all guns blazing, who knows..

A member for 10 years and still no mouldy peanuts Member 1252, 4481 posts SQ 160, BP 110, DL 215485.0 kgs @ 98kgs UnEq | Unfortunately, Sexy Mike Howarth (for it is he) speaks the correct in his multi-point post. Misha has always been on the outside in terms of training, supplementation and (unfortunately for any olympic sport) the most important aspect: towing the line. Sucking up to the powers that be, even if you cannot stand them, is a great way to get your toe through the door. The problem with doing so, for an experienced athlete like Misha, is that he probably believed his training would suffer as a result which would make it a moot point. Isn't bulls**t politics in sport a great thing?
