I think you'll probably find that throwers do an awful lot of Olympic movements in their off season, so might not be a bad place to start!

There was a team USA B team shot putter at the club 2 years ago and his gym work seemed to consist of a lot of:

- olympic movements like power cleans and power snatches, snatch from hang etc
- push presses
- bench presses
- squats

I never saw him deadlift once which I thought was quite interesting.

yeah he did.

He came and shattered all Oxford/Cambridge records without even trying! I think his records here will stand for a very long time lol.

I want to get back into shotput and discus when i get to uni, i did athletics before powerlifting so it'll be interesting how my strength now turns into distance when i start again.

this is a really interesting topic. Outside the tech work, one would think (without googling the thing) that the power for it is all explosive and hips/legs driven - and the arms/shoulders thing is secondary, and even that would be explosive.

I have seen some youtube clips of shot putters and discus throwers doing fast bounce benches too on top of the usual suspects of hang snatches, power cleans, various jerks and what not. Squats were very fast and explosive too, not really powerlifting style.

I am one explosive man Wink i always found the comment about powerlifting being a slow twitch movement bo***cks, if i'm not fast out of the hole on the squat the bas***d won't go, same with all the other movements.
