Eek
I *think* that should be enough to earn you a spot Tongue
I didn't bother entering an effort for either distance. I don't mind finishing way out of the lead in a "live" erg race, I've done it in the past. But in a virtual race from my garage? Meh. I'll be doing the French virtual champs, however, out of habit and because it's more my level.

I've got to admit I was absolutely gutted when they suddenly announced it was fully virtual and cancelled the Europeans altogether! But I didn't want to let the training go to waste so thought I'd enter anyway although I agree it really doesn't have the same feel to it. Hopefully back to 'the good old days' in 2023!

Has anyone here entered a qualification effort to the World Rowing Indoor champs?

Gave my 500m PB a nudge down to 1:12.7 as my entry:

It looked like he knew what he was doing so I think he may of had some ''Cheeky " practice

The spoilsport in me should point out it is a World best unless he is willing to take a test.

Would love to see Tom Stoltman have a crack pretty sure all the top strongmen would do well.

I don't think any of the top strongmen would even try and pretend they're eligible for any official records, but this is without a doubt an impressive feat of power/strength!

jt said:Thats great pacing, one mans mad sprint (35spm ) is another mans warm up. Kudos.

Did you see Colossal has done 2.58 something @20spm?

There's no prizes for doing it in fewer strokes.. I had a couple of attempts at a slightly higher rate but handled down both goes unfortunately Unhappy

1.13.0 very nice.

Did you see the 13year old Zimbabwean girl did 1.31.9? She is 6'4'' so many sports she could excel at.

Wow that is a ridiculous time! It'll be interesting to see which direction she gets pulled in as she gets older too. I expect the American university scholarship offers are coming in already!

macroth said:Qualifying was a bit of a hassle, wasn't worth it for me. Seems like many people didn't bother, compared to other years.

Bad luck with the computer glitch Unhappy , would you have podiumed (open) or won (30-39)? Stupid online competitions.

Just watched the video. Very solid row indeed, not much of a fade at the end.

Obviously it's hard to say as I didn't have to react to the race start. I think it should have been good enough for bronze in the open behind Anton the Ukranian who pulled 1:12.8 and Big Phil who pulled 1:11.6.

Brutal Eek
Proper fly and die there, and nice to see someone pulling so fast but with a relatively low rate. Well done Grin

I definitely rely more on the strength and stroke length than I do the rate, but this was an attempt at a very controlled first 250m rather than go out hitting max watts from the start. If I did open up with 1:03 pulls I'd more than lose the benefits after about 300m, but it's a strategy that seems to work for Phil!

Has anyone competed / is anyone competing in the World Indoor Rowing Championships this week?

I was all set to race yesterday until two minutes before and the system booted me out for connectivity issues. Ended up doing a standalone time trial of 1.13:0 cruelly rounded up from 1:12.9!

Thanks for that. An illustrious sporting past. I'm a couple of inches taller than you, but about the same weight. Wingspan is 213cm. I've only just started rowing, but I'm quite enjoying it.
Look forward to seeing you pushing your times in the coming months. Your 1000m is the only one where I feel like I'm in the same ballpark as you.

I look forward to following your progress, clearly you have the levers and potential to go very fast!

The 1000m is something I've been meaning to revisit - both my 1k and 2k time were done at rate 24 as I just don't have the fitness to rate higher for long!

Apologies, that comment was not directed towards Lawrence.
There was a far taller thrower with American links who I had heard called the 7ft syringe, he and his wife had both served bans.

Ah yes, Carl Myerscough, 6ft10, The Blackpool Tower. Roided Up to his eyeballs.

A tidy triple, how about the 7ft syringe was he really known as that in throwing circles?

I've never heard that phrase before! I'm not just saying this, but I've never seen or heard anything to suggest he isn't a clean athlete. There are far weaker athletes who I'd have stronger suspicions of.

jt said:Thats a pretty decent "ape factor"

Did you ever throw against Lawrence Okoye? I reckon he would have a decent 100m on the erg.

Maybe we start a Fantasy rowing league

Fantasise who you would like to see row what distance.

Yes, I trained and lived with Lawrence for a month in America in March 2012. I twinged my back handing out 225kg on the bench press which I think he tripled! lol

Well f*ck me. That's fast.
How long have you been rowing? A quick biography would be really interesting.
Happy

I’m 32 now and did do a little bit as a teenager and entered BIRC in the 2k back in ‘05. I didn’t pick the handle up between about 2007 and 2018 when I started sprint training again.

I’m 118kg, 198cm with a 210cm arm span. I came 7th at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in the discus, and a frustrating 4th at this years World Indoor rowing champs in the 500m back in February.

I think that’s about it really - I’ve been a long time lurker on Sugden since about 2010!

Sparrow said:What a great pace to hold for a minute! A minute is a long time when you're going flat-out.

Maybe you could add some of your other times/distances and Boar could add them to the leaderboard?

Thanks! These are the ones I can remember for now:

100m - 13.3 (12.5 on slides)
500m - 1:13.2
1000m - 2:52.5
2000m - 6:13.3
30r20 - 8405

jt said:I am not after copying you, I think it would be hard to copy 20 years younger and a foot taller!

But am interested in the type of training you do. Whats your Discuss pb? (with a 2kg no Perris Wilkins here!)

I agree with you regarding Terry and the 500m I guess we haven't seen him do it for a reason.

My discus PB is 63.00m from back in 2011. I don't think anyone knows what Periss' actual 2kg personal best was! Wink Unfortunately my best throwing days are probably behind me though as I had a lumbar disc replacement at L5/S1 back in 2013 and haven't given it the same complete focus since then.
